“Stop” she tried again, her voice shaking
“Stop what? Am I hurting you?”
“Yes!” she cried, fisting the front of his hoodie in her trembling hands “Stop caring! Stop asking me about how I feel! Stop making me feel like this! Just let me deal with this my way. I don’t need to see how fucking easy this is for you! I don’t need you coming over here to remind me how Gods damned happy you are! I see well enough of it all over tv. Let me heal my way!”
He blinked. Twice.
His brows furrowed and his frustration made him tighten his grip so that he knew now, it hurt more than pleased her.
“Easy?” he hissed “You think this shit has been easy for me?”
“Isn’t it?” she spat
“Angel you act like you’re the only one who actually got feelings in this and I’m getting real sick of that shit! Just because I have someone to take my mind off of it sometimes, doesn’t mean that I didn’t lose just as much as you did. I lost my best friend!

Chapter 258
Tumblr media
Trey
Lane turns around and grabs my face. He kisses me then frown his face up at me. I love his personality. He loves playing games and trying to make people laugh. His games are never evil or get him in trouble. He kisses me again. I bite at him then kiss him back. He frowns again making a funny face this time. I chuckle.
"Dylan!" Cammie snaps.
"No." He says hiding.
I help him hide under the pillows of the couch. JJ bounces into the room followed by Cammie. She had a towel and clothes in her hands.
"Where is Lane?"
"I don't know."
She looks behind her. "I sent him in here to you. He didn't come back out of here."
I shrug. "Oh. Why you need him?"
"It's time for a bath. The water got green bubbles." JJ says excited.
"I here." Lane says revealing himself.
JJ spins around like he shocked. "Lane!"
"Come on." Cammie says walking back out the room. "Lane you were hiding from me?"
"Yeah." He says excited.
I answer my phone. It's Chris. "What's up?"
"She just had low blood. It's fucking low as shit. They had me fucking shitting bricks. I need to get better at thinking under pressure."
"Shit don't get easier."
He sighs. "I'm just glad you there and going through this shit before me. I got you by my side."
"I'm already married but you can be my side bitch."
"I ain't paying you no fucking attention. We probably gonna come by there after she sees the doctor. I hope she don't need to be admitted. Oh she is going to talk to her parents on her own. Without me. So they can talk shit about me."
"Why on her own?"
He takes a few seconds. "Cause I have been working my ass off to make her feel better these past few days. She been giving me her ass to kiss. She admitted it and to make up for it she gone talk to her parents alone."
"I mean I get that but you still don't want to put it off on her. Be there still."
"I like punishment better."
I chuckle. "No you don't. Cause when she sad..."
"Yeah." He sighs. "I'll call you back. I'm bout to go upstairs to their hotel room then."
"How you know you ain't miss it already?"
"Her dad just went upstairs. So I'm sure she waiting on him." He says. "Aight."
"Yeah." I say hanging up.
How do I supposed to help him through his shit when I don't know what the hell I'm doing for myself? Don't really feel like having the weight on me. I could really use advise myself. Forrest walks into the room carrying Caden.
"How your baby and his mama doing?"
"Good." He sits down.
I nod. "They don't need shit?"
"She got a new nigga."
"What is that saying to me about her needing shit?"
"If she need shit her nigga can get it for her."
"But she carrying your baby."
He shrugs. "I went to her last appointment with her. Going to the next one. He found out who I was and ain't letting her answer her phone for me. So let him take care of her. She was hinting around that he mad cause she ain't saying she hate me and talking child support. So yeah."
"You picking this lifestyle huh?"
"Everybody ain't God's favorite."
I sit up. "Damn what's that supposed to mean?"
"Don't nobody else get a wife like Cammie cause you got her."
"It ain't cause I'm better than you."
He bites Caden's hand making him laugh. "Well anyway. I'm keeping the peace between us. She down for coparenting and she gets along with April."
"Shit that's a blessing. Aggravating ass lady."
"Cad." Forrest says holding Caden up. "You got the dance moves?"
Caden turns his head in my direction. He kicks his feet and yell at me. Not a cry just a loud ass yell. Forrest turns him towards me. Caden looks back at Forrest and yells again. He swings his arm hitting himself. He gets mad then starts crying.
"Caden." I say.
Forrest brings him over to me. He doesn't stop crying when he gets to me. I rock him a bit.
"Aye take him back where you got him."
"Cammie gave him a bath. That's where I got him from. Can't take him back."
I put him on my shoulder then start patting his diaper. He screams a few more times then settles down a bit. He was done with Forrest very quick. I rock him some more then stand up rocking him. He quiets all the way down now that he got me up. He holds his head up looking around.
"Man just give me the baby when it's walking and talking."
"You gonna miss everything." I say holding Caden so I can look at him. "Caden?"
He watches me then start dozing off. He tries to move around waking himself up. I go to the bathroom that I hear all the noise in.
"Where King?" I ask.
"King went he mommy." JJ answers.
Lane was stacking bubbles on top of a boat. "Stupid ass."
"Say it again and I'm going to slap you in your mouth." Cammie snaps reaching towards Lane.
"Mommy." Lane rus away from her.
"Don't you call nobody that."
Lane just looks at her then goes back to playing like it never happened. I jump scaring Caden. Cammie had touched my leg. JJ laughs looking up at me. I smile then lean towards Cammie. I wasn't paying attention to her. After I kiss her she gets on her phone.
"I'm back." She says.
"So how are the babies?"
"B. A. D."
Lane stands up. "What you say Mommy?"
"B. A. D." JJ repeats.
"You say that!" Lane laughs splashing in the water. "B. D."
Cammie chuckles. "Girl. They are doing fine. You hear Lane and JJ."
"Hey, Lane. Hey, JJ."
I turn and walk out the room. The phone said it was Kim. More than likely k. Michelle. Gwen stops me in the hallway. She takes Caden from me without saying a word to me. She walks away talking to him. That boy is fucking sleep but thats how they like him.
Tumblr media
Cammie
Trey moves Lane off of my lap. Now why he bothering my baby. Lane has been on my lap being good for about an hour. Watching YouTube videos and playing a million games for 2 seconds. Not bothering nobody. With his headphones on, I might add. Perfect little angel enjoying my lap being free of Caden. In this case or Trey.
"Daddy." Lane says taking his headphones off. "I go to Mommy?"
"She right here." Trey says putting his head in my lap.
My poor baby so confused. He puts his tablet down and walks away. Trey sits up kissing my lips. His childish ass is probably proud of himself for getting rid of the competition. I shake my head as he turns to the TV. I had it on reruns of other Dancing with the Stars shows.
"Why you watching this stuff?" Trey asks.
"To see what the show really about. Looks like I'm going to be paired with an unlikely match. Probably older and white. Young black raising to fame dancer. Underdog partner."
Trey looks at me. "You making that up?"
"No."
"Doesn't seem like you planning on winning."
I kiss him. "Just to the finals. That's my goal."
"So you gonna have to train your partner really good."
"That's MiMi's job."
Trey blows. "Really?"
"Yeah. Plus all the men do are fancy steps and catches. I mean it's not like super hard to catch somebody and shake your hips a bit. But for a non dancing background white man. Geesh. I dont have the patience after dancing with Chris for so long."
"Your kids?"
"They have dancing backgrounds, they black, and they love to dance."
Trey looks at the TV. "So this not going to be simple?"
I suck my teeth. Trey looks at me. "Lane?"
"Ma'am." He says turning to me.
"What do you have?"
He looks down then at me. "This?"
I roll my eyes. "You want me to yell at you. You know you know better. Give it here."
"This?"
"Oh shit." Trey says playing attention to Lane.
I hold out my hand. "Bring it here, Lane."
"I don't Mommy." He says walking to me. "It okay. Okay?"
"Talking his self out of trouble." Trey smiles.
This boy had a fucking knife out the kitchen. I don't know what he is doing with it. I don't know why the boy was in the kitchen. Trey grabs the knife from Lane then gets up walking out the room with it. Lane goes running after him talking about something. Like did you fucking come in here to kill somebody? Your daddy because he moved you out the way? What exactly is behind you carrying a damn knife? He comes back with a bowl. He sits it down by my leg then climbs on my lap. Trey comes back into the room eating something. Lane had strawberries, blueberries, and yogurt.
"Your mama was in the kitchen cutting up fruit for Ike."
"She didn't see her grandson steal the knife?"
Trey shrugs. "She was using the one she had. The rest were put up."
Lane eats his blueberries talking to himself. Trey squeezes himself between me and Lane. Lane sits back squeezing Trey more then he goes back to eating. They better leave me alone. Lane blows frustrated. I don't know what his problem is. He rams his body back against Trey again. Trey gets in my face moving away from Lane.
"Yall really killing it." I say through my teeth.
"We love you." Trey says kissing my neck.
I pause the show rewinding it. "I should be able to pick my partner. Have an audition first. I swear I ain't with no bullshit."
"That King say. Bullshit." Lane says cutting his eyes at me.
"Don't play with me."
Lane licks his finger. "I do it Mommy? Me? I do?"
"That's a bad word."
"No it not. What?"
I roll my eyes. "Go be a kid."
"Bullshit is a bad word." Trey says.
"No it not." Lane sucks his teeth. "Bullshit?"
"Shit. Bullshit." Trey explains.
Lane ain't having it. "A bull."
"Bullshit."
"A cow?"
Trey looks at Lane. "A cow?"
"B for Bull." Lane says like Trey stupid.
Trey looks at me then kiss my lips. "Your turn."
"I am not following him up." I snap.
Lane keeps eating his food like he won his case. He is going to say that fucking word again. He knows he isn't supposed to say it. I'm not playing games with him. I'm not following his ass up. Trey lost to an almost 3 year old. I can't just call him 2. He pass that stage. We doing full sentences and logic now. Tell me exactly why I can't do it. That's his current stage. Why? King says it why can't I?
"Lane Who said a bull is a cow?" Trey asks.
"Huh?"
Trey takes his food. "Who said a bull is a cow?"
"My fruit." He whines starting to get down. He is going to tell on Trey.
"Here." Trey says giving it back. "How the hell he knows that?"
Lane goes back to eating his food.
"Lane?"
"Ma'am Mommy."
I smile kissing him. "B is for bull?"
"Bah." He says.
"Oh." I kiss him. "Very good. Where did you see the bull?"
He licks his hand. "The church. The big church."
Trey sucks his teeth. "He tells you just that simple."
"I asked a different question, Tremaine. He figured it out on his own so he didn't know the answer to your question."
"Yeah." Trey says mad still.
I sigh kissing him. Lane spins around looking at me. He watches me kiss Trey again. He pushes the empty bowl off his lap. Just for attention. I push his ass down towards the bowl. He fights me then hits the floor. He picks the bowl up throwing the spoon. I ignore him.
"Lane, I love you." I say.
He moves towards the spoon then looks at me. "Mommy?"
"Daylan."
"Get the fork." He says grabbing it.
"I love you, Lane." I say again.
He runs. "My fruit." He starts whining.
"Right here, Lane." Someone says to him from the hall.
What am I gonna do with all these men? Caden fighting Lane. Lane fighting his fucking daddy. Next they both gonna be fighting Trey. If Trey doesn't spoil Caden so much he doesn't listen to me like Lane does. Me and Lane understood each other before Trey. I don't get my way with Caden. I can't say Trey not around because he is always there.
"If our next baby exist and it's not a girl I'm leaving." I say.
"I got what my mama had. I wouldn't care if we didn't have anymore." Trey says getting in my face.
I kiss him. "There goes your son."
Lane walks into the room whining. Gwen is behind him with his bowl. He cries pushing her back out the room. She lean over and stand him up straight. I'm getting happy inside to see some real discipline but she fucking gives him the bowl. He takes it walking away no more crying. Fucking fake. Where is the discipline?
"O big face snotty nose." Trey says to Lane.
"Mh." Lane says twisting his shoulder like he don't care at Trey.
I grab the bowl that almost tilts over on me. He falls out on the ground.
"Boy you need... get this bowl." I snap.
"It mine." He pouts.
His ass sleepy. I roll my eyes. "I know that sir. Get your bowl."
He climbs up on my lap first moving Trey. Oh my goodness. Trey picks with him. I'm about to run away. I sit the bowl in Lane's lap. He starts eating the blueberries out of the bowl. He had more blueberries than anything else this time. Trey kisses Lane. Lane tries to feed him a blueberry. They friends now?

an irresistible nightmare | scaramouche
Tumblr media
- avoiding you was his option, but seeing you in his dreams where you two made love made him shed sweat from his neck, longing for your touch.
(this scenario is inspired by that one chuuya fanfic on wattpad “Mr. Fancy Hat” by -tasfiah)
It was very late at night when Scara decided to let himself get washed up by some liquor, it was already 11 pm when he's the only one in the kitchen, his sumeru boys members already asleep but him, hes wide awake, trying to get something off his chest.
Gulping another wine, thinking things. Not until when someone came in the kitchen, resulting him to immediately drift his eyes, only to find out that it's just you. Scara gulps, looking at you. He can't seem to focus on his drinks when all of a sudden you came at his sight.
"What are you doing in this late hour, scara?" You tiredly ask him, the boy could only replied in a very short one. "None of your business." He said, earning a snort from you.
"Can't sleep huh? Had a nightmare?" You said, going to the ref to find something to eat.
Scara didn't replied to you, his eyes seems so focused on your back, literally eyeing you up and down on your night gown. Boy he was gawking at your wearing, the night gown was too distracting for him, he can't seem to focus out from you, your one strap falling out from your shoulder just send him shivers on his spine, it was indeed too revealing.
"Yeah... I did." He replied, you can feel someone staring at you, and you know damn well it's him. Scara seems so intrigued at your wearing that he noticed the hems of your shirt slowly lifting it up when you try to bent to get the food on the ref, the blue haired blink twice, gripping the glass.
"Oh yeah? What was your nightmare about?" You ask again, now facing him, a popsicle on your hand now, slowly unwrapping it, revealing a strawberry red flavor one, you were not giving any fucks but you just licked it cause you were hungry.
God. The man in front of you has his eyes on how you lick the tip of the popsicle, his mind went crazy thinking wild shits about you, immediately avoiding eye contact when he responds.
"None of your business. Don’t ask nonsense questions." Scara replied, sipping his wine. You kept looking at him while eating the popsicle.
"Mhm... so you're used to it?" Damn he could hear your muffled sounds that you create while you try to talk against the popsicle, the man was already sweating on his neck. Grabbing his nape.
"Y-yeah, just like that..." He said while grabbing his neck, looking down, completely avoiding your gaze that could kill. You giggle.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you." You said seriously, Scara was taken aback at you.
The boy was so lost for words when you two met gaze again, you were looking at him, your tongue still licking the popsicle, Scara eyes that too, and you were oddly attractive standing there with your night gown lingerie on, that dangerous silk nude lingerie! It was definitely turning him on, damn your legs was so flawless he sometimes wished he could hang it around his n—
"Eyes up here, boy." You whistled, Scara widen his eyes when he realised what he has done.
Scara fake coughed. "Go to sleep already, we still have commissions to do together tomorrow." He said, ears go red, you could only smile.
"Of course, but let me finish eating this first."
"No, bring it to your room."
"Hmph no, ill finish it here."
"Tch, how absurd, you really want me to hear your licking sounds while eating that huh?" Scara boldy said.
You could only giggle.
"I know you like it." You said, with a big grin on your face, your tone teasing him.
"Fuck you, I’d rather listen to babies crying than hear your licks."
"But I'm your baby, you will listen to my cries too, right?"
Scaramouche choked on his drink, completey shocked at your wild statement, coughing hardly, you just laugh at his actions that's so stupid.
He looked at you with that annoyed look on his face.
"You little lady, why dont you go back to your room huh?"
"What about no?"
You eagerly provoked him, as your back lean on the kitchen counter, looking at him with that cheeky grin of yours, proceeding to lick your popsicle.
Scara had enough at you, he put down his glass of wine in the counter, walking towards you, your heart racing when his presence was so close to yours.
His arms in between your body as his hand is pressed against the counter.
"Don't make me do that by force." His tone serious, eyes staring at you.
"What you gonna do huh?" You teasingly tilt you head, eyeing him with a sly grin on you, he’s too intoxicated by you. He’s going crazy.
“Y/n please, don’t make this even more hard for me.” He finally gives in, Scaramouche’s tone desperate, lazy tired eyes looking at you, he looks so submissive currently, you are indeed taken aback at this.
Scara is a patient man, he’s not the kind of guy that would just bend you over right now especially at the kitchen counter right?
Poor scara, he is indeed turned on.
Scaramouche hides his embarrassed face on your shoulder. You are taken aback at this, that you didn’t even noticed the popsicle starts to melt in your hands.
“You’re turning me on. Are you trying to seduce me on purpose with this night gown, aren’t you?” He muttered against your shoulder that’s near in your neck, you couldn’t help but shift your posture.
This time, you are the one who’s in trouble. Scara brings his head up to eye you again, his gaze drifts from you lips down to your neck, his hungry eyes evident that he’s needy.
“How fucking dare you? Wear this casually in front of me? What are you trying to do?” Scara’s tone hoarse, catching a breath.
“I like it to wear it.”
“Seriously? That’s your reason?”
“Why? Do I have any other reasons?”
“Aren’t you even thinking about the consequences when you wear that? You’re giving me trouble.”
“What kind of trouble?” Innocently asking him while he’s suffering in front of you right now is insane.
“Y/n, I have wet dreams about you. The reason I came here because you were in my dream, a nightmare I wished to avoid yet it’s there, you are in it. It’s making it difficult.” His tone desperate for longing, an obvious honesty washed over the guy, you could feel his boner against you.
“Then you came here all of a sudden while I was clearing my thoughts, seeing you in this…” The dark blue haired breathes out after his sentence by eyeing your dress, he’s trying so hard to not fuck you right now.
You are incredibly speechless.
“You are the cause of my arousal, isn’t that the worse thing you’ve ever heard?”
Scaramouche thinks this is the wrong time to confess his feelings, an annoyed ‘tch’ comes out from his mouth as he finally lets you go, walking away from you.
“Forget about this, pretend this hasn't happened.”
That night where Scara left you alone in the kitchen after he spit his desires at you, leaving you wanting for more, wanting to hear his hidden temptations for you. You weren’t able to stop him but you glad you didn’t.
Because you too, were aroused at him that night.

K A I D E N
I had just found a parking space when my brother shot me a text. Looking over I replied in my head and proceeded to park before getting out and making my way inside the airport. I was more than geeked about having my baby brother here with me. He was just like me, hotheaded, horrible attitude and a nasty mouth with no filter.
I looked around for a good minute but then I saw that damn beard. My phone went off again and I could see him getting frustrated. “Yo Karter!” His head snapped back so fast I thought the shit was gon’ break off. “MY NIGGA!” We exclaimed together as we dapped and pulled each other in for a hug.
I stepped back and crossed my arms observing him. “Bruh you done grew the fuck up on me.” He stroked his beard cheesing. “Shit it has been a while since we’ve seen each other,” I felt bad about that shit. “but fuck it. Im just stoked to be here man. I missed you.” He dapped me again laughing. I grabbed one of his suitcases and led the way out.
Packing his shit in the trunk, we got in and you know I had to roll a fat wood. “Still in that shit huh?” I sighed and shook my head. “Not for long.” That was one thing he hated the most. Best believe he’s a pothead but dealing? You can kiss that goodbye. Soon as I mentioned something about it he turned and walked away from me.
He would try and be funny sometimes paying me when he wanted weed but of course I slipped the shit back to him. Thats my bro so he always get free shit. “Londyn finally gave me chance.” I spoke out hoping to shift the topic and mood. “No shit! You bagged the baddest in the city. I follow her on instagram nshit and boooooy! She still fine.”
My face flattened as I sealed the wood and mugged his ass. “Shut the fuck up nigga.” He held his hands up in surrender and leaned his seat back. I backed out of the parking space and lit the wood. “But it happened on some wild shit. Some drunk shit actually,” he chuckled, “took her on a nice little date nshit.” I puffed on the blunt before passing.
“Its shocking but not really ‘cause it was bound to happen. Everybody knew yall was gon’ end up together sooner than later.” He shrugged taking a hit. He did have a point though. When I say everybody and their mama knew, I meant that. “Oh shit before I forget, we going out tonight for her sisters shop opening. So I hope you’on got plans.” Karter scrunched his face. “Nigga what plans would I have?” I busted out laughing and snatched my blunt from him.
Tumblr media
L O L A N I
I groaned and pushed my head into the pillow as loud music blared through the house. “Get the fuck up! Get ready!” I popped up and seen Loryn standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. “You over slept Lani.” She walked over to my closet and placed my makeup box on the vanity. “Oh shit. I wanted to flat iron my hair.”
I sat at the edge of the bed. I still had to find something to wear. “You look beautiful with curly hair. Chop chop! Lets move.” She walked out closing the door behind her. I really didnt mean to over sleep but shit I was tired. After my bubble bath I smoked a blunt and watched movies on Netflix until I fell asleep.
I was still distraught about earlier today. I felt so stupid for wanting to text Omari. I wanted answers but then again I didnt. Shaking it off, I went to the closet and picked through my clothes. I could either go classy or simple but still fashionable. I decided on simple.
Once I got dressed I brushed my teeth then started on this lion mane of mine. All I had to was wet it a little and apply moisturizer. I needed my curls to pop tonight. Checking myself out in the mirror I blew a kiss then turned out the light before returning to the closet. “Have you heard from mama?” Loryn busted in my room once again. “No. Call her.” I said in duh tone. “You call her.”
She rolled her eyes and sat on my bed. “You look cute by the way.” I waved her off and continued to dial my mom. When she answered she said, “yes Lani? Make it quick.” I placed her on speaker phone and handed the phone to Loryn. “Ma? You cant miss this night. I need you there!” She expressed. “MA! You hear you?”
“I hear you baby. Oh shit, Im on the way home now.” You could her rushing off to somewhere and slamming a door closed. “Im grabbing my things now and leaving. I wont miss it. I promise.” She said her goodbyes and explained to someone what was going on. Lordyn didnt hang up until she heard the car start up. “Shes gonna miss it.” She whispered looking like she wanted to cry.
“Stay positive. Let go get a drink.” I grabbed her hand and dragged her to the kitchen yelling out for my other two sister. “C’mon girls!” Londyn and Leilani walked into the kitchen looking fly as fuck. I swear my mama made some fine ass twins. I took the bottle of Hennessy out the freezer and grabbed some shit glasses.
I poured shots for us and motioned for them to pick one. “I just wanna toast to my bad ass sissy Loryn. I couldn’t be more proud of you!” We clinked our glasses together chanting, “congrats suh!” before throwing the shot back. I heard the door open and my mom walked in. “Oh fuck im late.” My sisters and I fell out laughing. She threw her purse and bag on the couch shrugging her jacket off. “Ima throw something on then join in.”
I got another glass and poured us another shot. We waited for my mom to come out, and five minutes later she came out looking flawless as always. “Ok Ok,” my mom grabbed her glass and looked over at Loryn. “to my precious Ruby, Im more than proud to be your mother. Im more than proud about you opening up your own business. I pray for positive vibes and many more blessings to come your way.”
She raised her glass and we followed. “Mommy loves you baby.” We clung glasses again and down the liquor. “Kaiden is here. Lets roll.” Londyn announced and I instantly got nervous. We grabbed everything we needed before leaving out and locking the house. “Hey mama Loraine.” Kaiden, who had flowers in his hands, walked up to her giving her hug and kissing her cheek. “And congrats to the Ms. Loryn.” He handed her the flowers and kissed her forehead.
“Wassup Lei, Lil Lo?” Kaiden proceeded to kiss our foreheads leaving Londyn for last. He wrapped her in a bear hug placing a fat kiss on her lips. “This my lil brotha Karter, Kater this is Mama Loraine and the the twins.” He did a quick introduction. I was definitely checking out Karter. His beard. Those lips. Thats damn smile! Calm down Lani.. I coached myself.
“Yall look beautiful,” he complimented once he took his attention off of Londyn. “whats the riding plans?” He continued. “I’ll drive. And mama and the twins can ride with me.” Loryn spoke up. Kaiden looked back at me. “Wanna ride wit us Lil Lo?” I looked around before nodding my head. Londyn squinted her eyes and walked to the car.
“Follow me Kaiden.” “Already.” We parted ways and hopped in the car. “What you call yourself doing Kai?” He cocked his head to the side and cranked the car. “Fuck you talkin bout princess?” We had to wait for Loryn to back out of the driveway before we could move. As always, Kaiden pulled out a wood that was already rolled. “Ima wait til mama and them pass to light it.” He looked at me and Karter in the backseat.
“You know exactly what Im talking about. Dont play stupid.” She looked back at us and squinted her eyes again. “Girl mind ya business.” Kaiden turned her around and took off behind Loryn.
Not even thirty minutes later, we pulled to Loryns shop, Naturals. She had her own lot and plenty of space for clients. There was close to a hundred people waiting outside. I was shocked. Kaiden cut the engine and we got out at the same time. As we got closer to the door Loryn got teary eyed. “Wow! First and foremost, thank you all for coming out and celebrating with me. Im beyond grateful.” Everyone cheered clapping their hands.
“I would like to thank my family for motivating me and keeping me focused. Next, much much love to my wonderful working staff. Im more than excited for yall to see everything so, lets get it!” She slapped her hands together smiling hard and taking a pair of scissors. I watched on, with my cheeks damn near hurting and tears in my eyes, as Loryn cut the rope. “YES LORYN!” I yelled out clapping and whooping! Soon after everyone else joined in.
Tumblr media
L O R Y N
“Welcome to Naturals.” I hugged and welcomed everyone in. I was amazed by the crowd and was filled with joy. I couldn’t do anything but thank the Lord. My shop came out looking beautiful. Each hair dresser had their own personal space. I sat the flowers Kaiden got me on the receptionist desk and walked around.
Seeing everyone smiling and enjoying their selves made my heart smile. “Congratulations beautiful.” Turning around I came face to face with Ace. “What are you doing here?” I haven’t heard from him in a while and now he decided to pop up. “I couldnt miss my girls day.” I leaned my head to the side and started to walk away. But then I thought, what good would that do? Knowing I was gonna end up in his bed later on.
“Now Im your girl? I havent seen or heard from you in weeks. Whats that about?” I placed one hand on my hip and looked up at him. Ace sighed and stepped closer to me. “I had a drop to make out of town. Came back this morning and been resting up since then.” His hands were in his pockets. “And you couldnt let me know that?”
“So you could come up with every reason in the book to keep me from going?” He fired back. I had to give him that so I stayed quiet. “I gotta lil gift for you. You’ll get it later on tonight. “ He leaned down, kissed my lips and made his way over to my mom to greet her. I swear I couldn’t stand him at times but he made me happy. Looking around again, I stopped when I seen Lolani and Kaidens brother chalking it up the bar.
He had to be saying some funny shit ‘cause she was smiling and laughing hard. Fuck they got going on? Deciding to leave it alone and ask later, I spotted Leilani and Londyn with Kaiden right behind her. “Hey yall.” I laughed a little approaching them. “Im loving the shop, its so spacious and classy.” I loved my twin.
“I love the colors. I even took this bomb ass picture in the bathroom.” Leilani showed me the picture and I instantly gassed her. “You so fuckin fine.” One of the caterers walked around us a glass of champagne. “Congrats again sus!” I could get use to hearing that.
—-
It was close to midnight when my guest left. I cleaned up with the help of my family, which only took half an hour. “Thank yall again, I cant express how much I love yall.” I handed my mom the keys and told her that I was riding home with Ace. She kissed my cheek and led them out the shop. “Im proud of you.” My dimples sunk in as my I looked down smiling. “Ready for ya gift?”
“More than ready.” I grabbed my belongings, grabbed his hand and waked out locking up behind us. He opened the car door for me and then made his way to driver seat. One settled into the car he reached in the back and pulled out a duffel bag along with small gift bags. He sat the duffel in my lap and opened it. When I say my mouth dropped.
It was neatly stacked bills filled to the top. “Thats for emergencies. Put in somewhere safe.” Next he handed me the small bags and I went searching. The bag held an iced Pandora bracelet. “Damn,” was the only thing I could say. In the next bag was a gold Cuban link chain. “Ice me out then!” We laughed and he took the jewelry to place them on me.
“Dont get fucked up out here Loryn, remember who ya man is.” I smacked my teeth and pushed his hand. “I dont need no reminder nigga.” He pulled me in for a kiss and pushed my seat back. “Now sit back and shut up while I enjoy myself.” Ace took my thighs and made me spread eagle. “Why you free ballin’?”
I looked down as he placed small wet kisses on my second lips. “Stop teasing me and get to it.” He slid two fingers inside of my mouth and flicked my clit. “I didnt tell you to talk so shut up?” He drug his tongue from the top the of my clit down to my opening. I grabbed onto his head shoving pushing him further into my pussy. “Fuck yeah baby!” I gyrated my hips and leaned my head back enjoying the moment. This was definitely the best way to end the night.

"Harper Smith" echoed in Isis' head as she stood in front of the man she shared a dance with just two nights ago. As she smiled and shook his hand, small panic started to work its way up her spine. Ignoring the tingling in her spine, she recited the speech she prepared while she was en-route to campus.
"Well, Mr. Smith, it is great to finally meet you. Again, I'm sorry that I'm late. Morning traffic was a little heavier than usual. It looks like you've gotten yourself settled in." Isis said as she looked around him and at his bag and books that were already set up on the table.
"Have you already gotten your usernames for the computer systems and Coursework?" Isis trailed on as Harper examined her facial features and was almost lost for words at how beautiful she was. The dark didn't do her justice, he thought to himself. His eyes searched her eyes to see if there was a sense of familiarity but she was hard to read.  Isis could tell he wasn't listening to her, so she politely waved her hand in front of his to get his attention.
"Oh...umm. Yes ma'am" Harper responded as he scratched his head.
"I read over the class schedule and you’ll be teaching two classes this semester. I hope that isn’t too much for you starting off.”
“No ma’am not at all. I’m actually excited about teaching here. It’s always been my dream to teach at Columbia University.”
“Well when you have a minute after you have gotten through your first day of classes, stop by my office. Until then, I’ll leave you to it." Isis said as the first couple of students started to trickle in. As Isis started her way back up the stairs she came down, the few early students greeted her with warm hellos, she politely waved back but her mind was somewhere else. As she took the last step, she quickly looked over her shoulder to make sure what just happened actually did. Seeing that Harper was still standing in the same place with a devilish smile on his face, she knew that it was real.
As Isis exited the classroom her mind continued to play the last five minutes over in her head. She moved through the now chaotic hallways almost in slow motion. Students waved as she passed and Isis absentmindedly waved back. Walking into her office she was met with the smell of brown sugar which meant her student assistant was here before she was. “͞Great͟” Isis murmured as she rid herself of her overcoat and briefcase. She walked over to her Keurig to make herself a much needed cup of coffee. As she debated over what flavor she wanted, her office door came swinging open and in walked her overzealous student assistant.
“͞Dean DuBois! I’ve been looking all over for you. I even tried to call you but your phone is off. Well I wanted you to know that the new professor was here and let me tell you he doesn’t look like a professor. He is actually too cute to be one. Did anybody check his credentials? I mean all the girls are talking about it….” Zoey was rambling and Isis wasn’t caffeinated enough for it and she was still unsure if her recent encounter was real or not.
Isis started to rub her temples as Zoey continued to rant on. “͞Zoey, you’re rambling and I haven’t even had my coffee yet.͟ And yes I know the new professor is here we just had a brief introduction.” Isis turned her attention back to her decision of what coffee to quick brew and just opted for a generic Dunkin Donuts’ pod. Popping it in the machine she pressed brew and turned to face Zoey.
Isis was ready to walk in to her office when the door opened and a few students entered. They came in to check to see if she needed any extra TA’s for the semester and before she could answer Zoey said a quick no. Isis chuckled internally because she now knows why people think she plays favorites. Even though Zoey can be long winded she is a hard worker and an overall great TA. Isis doesn’t have to ask much of her overzealous assistant and that works perfectly for her. The now disappointed students muttered an “oh okay maybe next semester” and exited her office.
“So Zoey, how was your break?” Isis’ back was now towards her again as she picked up her cup of hot coffee.
“It was cool! I didn’t do much. But I think I found the perfect seminar project for your class this semester. It is so awesome! I’m telling you, you’re going to love it!”
“I thought the point of a break was to take a break. This is your last semester with me Zoey, I want you to enjoy it.” Isis gave her a warm smile. “So what is this project you came up with?” Isis motioned her head toward her office door and Zoey followed her ready to present her idea. As Isis sat at her mahogany desk her office phone started ringing. Before she was able to react to it, Zoey answered it.
“Dean Dubois’s Office how can I help you?” Isis shook her head. She knew deep down inside that Zoey always means well but sometimes she forgets that this was in fact her office and this big office came with a secretary and she often walked the line of being more of a secretary then her TA.
“Hi President Stevens! Yes, Dean Dubois is here. Yes, please hold” Zoey handed the phone to Isis and then made herself comfortable on the high back leather chair that was opposite of Isis. Isis stared blankly at Zoey and waited for her to leave her office. Zoey finally looked up and caught the vibe that she was sending. “I have class anyway.” She muttered as she collected her stuff and left.
“Hello President Stevens. Welcome back!” Isis tried her hardest to sound upbeat but at the moment she just wanted to slide out of her shoes drink her coffee and catch up on emails before going to her first class. Isis blew into her coffee before taking a sip. She hissed when the scolding caffeinated drink burned the tip of her tongue.
“I came by your office today and I was surprised to see your TA and not you. Did you forget you had to meet the new member of your faculty?” Isis immediately rolled her eyes and took a deep breath.
“No, I did not forget. I spoke with him and we are meeting after classes today. And don’t you mean your new faculty member? This is your pick not mine. I don’t even know if he is qualified to handle this position. He doesn’t even look like a real professor.” Isis knew she sounded like a spoiled child but she was protective over her department and didn’t like anyone messing with it. The Dean and Isis went back and forth for a few minutes until she decided she was finished with the conversation and politely excused herself because a make believe student was at her door.
“Isis, do not run this professor off. He is a great addition to your department. Play nice!” And with that the phone went dead. Isis was left with a puzzled look on her face. “Did that man just tell me to play nice?” Isis scoffed. “Asshole” she said out loud.
Scoffing to herself, she realized it was time for her morning class, grabbing her still hot coffee and her laptop bag she exited her office and headed to her classroom. As she walked down the hall she made a pit stop by Harper’s class and popped her head in. He was in the midst of discussing gender roles and how they’ve changed over the last 20 years. Isis was slightly impressed with what he was saying and was getting ready to walk out when one of the students raised their hand.
“So, Professor Harper, what role does your wife or girlfriend play?” Isis studied the young students body language and it oozed sex. Isis rolled her eyes and let out a small scuff. She didn’t stay to hear Harper’s response because she knew that he would play right into that young students fantasies. She left the spot she was in and finished her walk to her classroom. Her thoughts were still all over the place. Dismissing them, she entered the classroom and set her stuff up.
The door flew open and in walked her first students, they all said hello and found a seat. Isis unpacked her laptop and phone, and placed both on silent. Just as she was about to take a seat, she overheard one of the students say “Girl, have you seen the new professor? Whew, I would love for him to teach me some roles…… in the bedroom” the group of women gave each other high-fives and giggled. Isis was appalled at the lewd comments that the group of students were making.
“Dean DuBois! Have you seen the new professor? I want to thank you for giving us some eye candy! Isn’t he fiiinnnneee?!” Another member of the girl group was now the one giving everyone a high-five.
“Yea he is something, alright” was all that Isis could mumbled. This man was giving her a headache and she didn’t even know him.

Chapter 28: Falling Apart
Luna
“I don’t believe this” David said to her. Luna smiled widely looking down at the child before her. “David this is a sign God has blessed us with a baby don’t you see?” She started. “We’ve been trying so hard and now we have what we’ve been wanting so bad and now we do. They just dropped her right on her door step” she said.
She started to cry and squirm in my arms as I held her. I took her out the wet blanket that she was wrapped in. I checked to see if she needed to be changed and that was root of the problem. “David are prayers have been answered” I said with a wide grin.
“Babe how many people just drive through this neighborhood dropping of children? “ David asked her looking at the child. We’ve been trying for months to get pregnant and things just haven’t been working. Now this happens.
“It’s a rarity but it was meant to be” I smiled looking down at her. David shook his head. “Im gonna clean her up. You must be cold being out there by yourself” I said heading upstairs.
.............
A couple hours went by and David ran out to get the baby some diapers and fresh clothes. I couldn’t imagine just leaving my baby but I’m glad someone left this baby on my door step. David came back with everything and sat the bags next to me before sitting on the couch with me. “How old do you think she is?” He asked.
“She’s still pretty tiny so I’m guessing 2 or three months you got the right size diapers right?” I asked.
“Yeah i did um so i guess we gotta go about naming her and adopting her” he suggested.
“I’ve been thinking of a few names but nothing has stood out yet” I said trying to think of a few names for her. “I was thinking Ava or Willow” i said just throwing out a few of the names I was thinking of.
“Hm She doesn’t look like a willow to me” David said as he held her little hand. “I don’t see you coming up with any ideas”
“Peyton, Mackenzie... I don’t know” David laughed. “I’ve never been good with names” he said as the bay looked up them both and her surroundings.
“She’s very curious” I pointed out.
I can’t wait to start this new journey.
Aaliyah
We hurriedly got into the car to catch the flight. I was anxious and I prayed that my baby was in tact. My nerves wouldn’t settle. I felt Trey put his hand on my knee to calm my but when i looked over at him by the way he was clenching his jaw. He was nervous too. The ride to the plane hanger was silent nobody dared to speak. Once we arrived, Trey and I quickly boarded taking a seat anxiously. I put my seat belt on wanting to rush the pilot and skip all the extras. “You got anymore of that weed?” I asked. Trey chuckled some and shook his head.
“I do but I don’t think it’s good for us to rely on substances to calm ourselves” he said as he scratched his beard. I sighed knowing he was right.
What am I thinking? This isn’t me at all.
“I know I’m just everywhere” I admitted before rubbing my temples. Trey nodded in agreement though he didn’t say I knew he felt the same. The plane finally took of and headed to our destination. I needed to see my baby. I needed to hear her laugh, see her her smile. I needed to hold her.
....................
The plane landed in Richmond International Airport where our driver was waiting for us. We quickly got off the plane and headed inside the car. Trey got the details of where Mia could be. They got the address and headed there quickly. The drive didn’t take long surprisingly the neighborhood was in area full of row houses. We pulled up to house where one of Treys spotters saw the car drop off something. We got out the car putting up our umbrellas to go knock on the door. We rang the door bell and knocked a couple times.
“I swear this nigga better be right?”Trey mumbled as we both waited for someone to answer the door. Someone looked out the window before they opened the door. “Can I help you?” An older gentleman asked greeting us.
“Hi this may seem like a weird question but was a baby dropped off her early today or last night?” Trey asked the man. He was hesitant to answer before he spoke up. “Uh yes please come in” he said inviting us in. “Babe who is it?” A female voice asked coming from another room in the house. “Sorry we should’ve introduced ourselves, my name is Aaliyah and this is my husband Trey we’re looking for our daughter. We were told she was here” I said since Trey was always straight to the point.
“Your the baby’s parents?” He asked.
“Yes we are” Trey said trying to hide his frustration. The lady came into the room where we assuming it was his wife she had Mia in her arms. I sighed in relief knowing my baby was okay.
“Can we help you?” She asked as she held Mia.
“They’re the baby parents” he said to her.
“Prove it” she said causing Trey to scoff at her words. “Prove it?” Trey asked before they could say anything I spoke up.
“She has a birth make on her left leg it’s looks like a heart. She has a mole on her right her cheek. She’s allergic to soy and she’s jaundice” I said to her. The woman looked at me before confirming the first two things that i said.
“You felt guilty so you come back after you dropped her off like she was trash” she said instantly pissing me off. I haven’t slept in a few days so both of us were bound to say anything.
“I didn’t drop her off here lady.. My baby was taken out of her crib while she was taking a nap. I haven’t slept in days because I didn’t know where my child was “ I explained feeling myself getting angry before taking a deep breath. “I just want my baby home that’s it” I said damn near begging.
”I’m not just gonna hand her over... unless you take a DNA test” she said to us.
“Bitch what?” Trey said furiously.
“If she’s your daughter take a DNA test” she shrugged.
“No fuck that give me my-“ Trey started.
“Fine” K said feeling Treys stare on me.
“Liyah you agreeing to this bullshit?!” He semi yelled.
“All we got is time Trey, if she wants science to make her look stupid then fine I’ll take a DNA test to prove that I laid down and conceived her and carried her for 9 months” i said irritated with all this but if this is what it takes to bring my daughter home then so be it.
Melina
It’s been a couple days since Jason was released from jail and it’s been quiet —too quiet. He still wanted us to head out Miami to stay with his uncle while he handled things here. Our flight leaves tomorrow so we just been laying low so no attention would be bought to us. I didn’t want to leave him but there’s nothing I can do. We put Justin down for his nap and he tapped my leg making me look at him. Jason took my hand and guided me to the bathroom closing the door turning the shower on. We looked each other in the eyes as he pulled me closer to him.
“I be so caught up in everything that I never get a chance to really look at you “ he started. “You’re still as beautiful as the day we met” he said running his fingers through my hair.
“When we bumped into each other in the hallway or when I almost hit you with my car” I said making us both laugh.
“Oh yeah you did almost run me over” He said making us both laugh. “Regardless, over time you’ve become more and more beautiful” he said making me blush.
“I know you didn’t just bring me in here to talk” I said to him leaning against the bathroom sink. He licked his lips and smirked as his eyes roamed my body. He lifted me up and put me on the counter. I put his shirt over his head before he threw it on the floor. He then pulled me closer to him by my legs as he began to strip me out of my clothes.
I kissed his lips deeply as he wrapped my legs around him. I unbuckled his pants to release his hard member. He circled my clit with his thumb in making my head go back in pleasure. My hormones were all over the place because of this pregnancy. I ran my hands down his chest lightly scratching it. Jason left kisses on on my neck making me moan. Gradually making his kisses lower he stopped paying special attention to my small baby bump. Feeling his fingers spread my second set of lips anticipating his tongue. I bit my lip as i watched him glide his tongue on my wet center making my head go back in pleasure. He picked me up taking us into the shower as he made love to me. We took it slow it felt different—it was passionate like he usually did it. He fucked me but made love to me at the same time. His strokes were deep and long as held me up against the shower wall. My moans were heard throughout the bathroom but not too loud that they would wake up Justin.
After our session in the shower, we changed and just chilled together. “I’ve been thinking” I said breaking the silence. He looked down at me giving me his full attention “About what?” He asked.
“I’ve been putting our son on you a lot and you’re right I work way too much to even spend time with him. I was thinking that maybe we can start sending him to day care, so he can spend time with kids his own age. On weekends we can both spend time with him ” I mentioned to him making him smile softly.
“You always been a hustler I love that about you. I like that idea I think that be cool let’s take it day by day” Jason said before I kissed his lips. “So round two or?” He asked with a raised eyebrow making me chuckle. “That’s how I ended up pregnant cause of multiple rounds with you” I smiled.
“I don’t see nothing wrong with that “ Jason said with a big grin. Before I could say anything else my phone started to ring, I answered the phone without looking at the caller ID. “Hello?“ I answered.
“May I speak to Melina Hennigan?” The voice asked.
“This is she who am I speaking with?” I asked with a confused look. Jason had a look of concern in his face as the phone conversation continued.
“My name is Jessica Griffith I’m from the coroners office. Mrs. Hennigan I’m calling regarding your father Carlos Perez” she started. I could feel my heart sink into my stomach. “I’m sorry to inform you that your father was found dead in an abandoned warehouse. We’re reaching out to you to see if you could identify the body. Could you come down to the morgue and do this?” Jessica asked as I felt the room go into slow motion.
I couldn’t get words out.
My father is dead.
“Mrs. Hennigan?” She said catching my attention again.
“Y-Yes I can do it” I finally got out holding in my tears.
“Please come by our office in a hour. I’m sorry for your loss” she said before handing up.
“Baby what’s wrong?” Jason asked. I couldn’t answer all I could do was cry. I just wanted him to let me live my life without the bullshit. I didn’t mean anything I said to him now he’s gone....
....
Jason drove me to the morgue to identify my father. He kept an eye on Justin while I headed inside. They took me to the back with Claire whom they called also. Instead of showing us his body they took a few pictures of him. They took into a small room that dimly lit with old green chairs. The table held old magazines from 2008 or something. We took a seat as they placed the pictures on the table just from the first one they sat down I recognized the scar that was on his left arm. He got it in a bar fight while in college. The slightest bit of hope of this being a mistake had been thrown out. Once they were finished, the detective finally spoke up. “Do you guys recognize any of these markings on Mr. Perez’s body?” He asked.
Claire’s crying filled the room leaving me to speak. The tears threatening to fall from my eyes burned the rim of my eye lids. “Yes, yes that’s him” I said getting choked up before I cleared my throat.
“Mrs. Hennigan, we believe your father was murdered. Do you know anyone that would want your father dead? Did your father have any enemies?” He asked her.
I couldn’t even begin to process all of this. I felt like I was going to throw up. “Rickey....” i said getting out as the detective wrote that down. “And what’s his last name?” He asked.
“Rickey... Satchel...” I said feeling myself go numb as they wrote it down.
“What relation did they have to each other?”
“Rickey use to intern for my father when we were in high school... Things were starting to get bad ... I know he killed him” I said. The detectives looked at each other as I continue to stare at the photos of my fathers body.
If they don’t catch him I’m gonna kill him myself.
They let us go and Claire continued to cry her eyes out. I had no more tears left to cry. I got into the car not saying a word. Jason wiped the tears that finally came out. I needed to be open with him about everything.
“Rickey killed my father” I mumbled. Jason nodded clenching his jaw. “I know...” he said tapping the steering wheel.
“I have to tell you something” I started gaining his attention. “I hated my dad for what he made do... I should’ve just told you”
“Tell me what Mel?” He asked looking confused.
“Remember the very first time i was pregnant?” I asked making him nod his yes. “That night you came to see me and you were asking about the baby and I told you I lost it. You asked me how... and I lied to you. I didn’t miscarry....” I said feeling myself starting to cry again. Jason sat back and licked his lips.
“What do you mean you didn’t miscarry” he asked.
“Please don’t hate me” I said feeling my chest get tighter. “I-I got an abortion because my dad told he was gonna cut me off if I didn’t. I also didn’t know if it was yours or Rickeys since it wasn’t long after he raped and it freaked me out” I rambled. Jason was quiet as he looked straight ahead not looking at me which broke me more than I realized. I cried hard clenching my chest.
“Mel...” he started. “I don’t hate you. If I’m being honest with you. I was scared that the baby wasn’t mine became of what he did to you. I just kept my head up speaking it into existence that the baby was mine. Even if it ended up being his I still would’ve supported you because that wasn’t your fault. I still would’ve been with you and my love for you wouldn’t have changed” he said.
I wiped my eyes as he spoke. “I know to pops hated my guts and didn’t want us to be together but I’m glad you stuck with me. You gave me beautiful son and you’re carrying my second child and you’ll be the one to carry our whole football team” he said making us both chuckle. “I’ll always have your back” he said making me smile through my tears.
“You handle the arrangements for your father and I’ll deal with Rickey”

L O N D Y N
I smacked my teeth as my phone was going off the hook. Somebody was blowing me up so much that it fell off the nightstand. I roughly threw the covers from over my head and felt for my phone. Once I had it, it started to ring again. “What took you so long?” I sighed and threw myself back on the bed. “Maybe ‘cause I was sleeping boy.”
It had to have been at least two or three in the morning. It was still dark as fuck out. “Wake up mama.” I rolled onto my stomach and wrapped one arm around my pillow. “Im up baby, whats the matter?” I asked. “Im bout to come through after I make this slam,” I kind of left out the part about him being deep into the drug business.
He started dealing our senior year of high school. I was the first to know and of course I didnt like it one bit. I begged him everyday to let it go but he was determined to make his money. “Ima be there in a hour.” I hung up and threw the phone next to me and drifted back to sleep.
I felt a strong pair of arms slide around my bare waist and I instantly melted. My man was finally here. “You better not have no shit in my room.” He hugged me from behind and I felt that he was only in his boxers. “Only my book bag and weed.” Just when I thought I was going back to sleep he started grinding his dick onto my ass. I whined and tried pushing him back.
“Im tired Kaiden. Its four in the morning and I just went to sleep at one.” He went to leaving passion marks on my neck while using one hand to roll my nipple between his fingers. “Let me just slid in real quick. I need to bust.” Being that I was completely naked he grabbed my leg, lifted it in the air and pulled his dick out.
He went to rubbing his dick all in my wetness and around my clit. His dick was so thick and long and I thought it was the prettiest thing in the world. “K-Kaiden.”
Kaidens grip on my leg tightened as he pushed into me causing me to moan and shudder. “Its gon’ be quick mama.” Our bodies moved as one as he picked up his speed. “Dont stop. Dont..fucking..stop!” He covered my mouth as he pounded me from the back with no remorse. I was close. I felt it coming and so could he. In a matter of minutes we were both cumming.
“Best quickie of my life.” He was practically panting breathlessly. “Aight you can go to sleep now.” Kissing me roughly on my cheek he pulled out but stayed close behind me.
--------
“Lon baby? Its mama.” She knocked softly and I scurried out of bed. Kaiden huffed and turned on his stomach covering his whole body. I snatched my silk robe off the door and opened the door as I tied the straps. “Good morning.” I cleared my throat. “Hey mamas Rosey,” I had to side eye her. “I made everyone breakfast sandwiches. Including Mr. Kaiden.” She gave me her best ‘I knew it’ face.
“Im going to be staying the night at the hospital, please dont forget to study. I need you to be ready before we can put you in the field mamas.” My mom is the head pediatric nurse and she took her job very serious. “I’ll get on it.” She kissed my cheek and said her I love yous before leaving the house. I closed the door and cleaned up the sprawled clothes from the floor.
“Yo ya ass is moving like crazy.” I turned to see that Kaiden was now woke and watching my every move. “You look so beautiful, I heard moms cooked.” He clapped his hands together and rubbed them together afterwards. “Whats the plans for tonight? Why you aint talkin’? Oh cat got ya tongue huh?” I stood completely still. Its too early for these questions. Like I just woke the fuck up.
“Im working all day, both jobs. I wont get home until its time to get ready for Loryns grand opening.” I raked my hands through my hair and walked back to the bed. He sat up against the headboard and patted his lap. Of course I made my way to him and got comfortable. “My lil brotha coming in town so I gotta pick him up, get him situated and then we’ll be on our way here.”
“Sounds good?” I nodded my head then kissed him quickly before getting up and getting ready for work.

“Move the fuck out the way then bitch.” I grumbled when some old bitch honked her horn at me. I was speeding towards Lolanis school. She called me at the last minute asking if I could come pick her up. Rolling up to the exact spot she sent me I seen her arguing with some nigga. So me being me, I immediately threw the car in park and jumped out making sure to slam the door.
Heads turned in the process but I aint give not one fuck. “Whats da problem?” When I say she looked back like she seen a ghost. I had to keep myself from laughing man. “What-How did you even get here that fast?” Who ever this nigga was , was grilling the fuck out of us. “So this the nigga that got you ignoring me? Must’ve been why you broke shit off too huh?” Lil Lo got a man? Well shit, had a man.
“Omari you know exactly why I ended shit between us! You think you can have your cake and eat it too? You had a whole baby on me and didnt give a shit to even tell me!” Well this shit here is awkward. I aint know if I should say something or just wait in the car. This what my ass get for getting out in the first place rather than just letting her know that I was here.
“Aye..Ima just go wait-” Lolani quickly held her hand up. “Its not gonna take long. So you’re just gonna stand there looking dumb?” I wanted to laugh but it wasn’t the right place nor time. Well neither was this argument they were having but hell, shit happens.
Right when I thought we could walk away he decides he want to start talking. And of course I couldn’t help my overly dramatic sigh. “Look Im sorry aight? I aint.. I aint mean to hurt you Lani.” I probably looked bout crazy going back and forth between them. “You aint no fucking sorry!” She made us both jump back as she bucked at him and talked through clenched teeth.
“You’re sorry that I found out. You’re sorry that we can no longer fuck and chill anymore! Im done Omari. I wish you the best of luck with your child and everything but please, Im begging you to please leave me alone ok?” She turned and strolled to the car with me on her heels.

Heartbroken. Shattered. Fucked. I dont know how to feel at this moment. Omari was my first everything and I just cant believe he would do something like this to me. But he did. The ride to my house was very much silent like I needed it to be.
I needed to get my thoughts together. Try to understand this whole thing. The only man I’ve ever loved and let explore my body has betrayed me. “You aight Lil Lo?” This nigga just had to ruin the peace and quiet. I picked at my nails and shrugged. “No but I’ll be fine. I get over it one day.” When I looked over at him he gave me a small side small. “You will.”
Why couldn’t Omari be like Kaiden? Even before he made things official with Londyn he was always loyal and true to her in their friendship. “You have any brothers?” He screwed his face then we both busted out laughing. “Ok ok, take me serious Kaiden.” He was in the middle of rolling a backwood as we sat at the red light.
“I do, hes suppose to be coming down tonight for Loryns grand opening.” He licked the wood closed and searched for his lighter. Looking up he saw that the light had turned green and proceeded down the road. “But if you’on mind me saying, Ion think its a good idea to just try to jump into something new after what I witnessed today.”
I crossed my arms and looked out the window. “Just like ya stubborn ass sister. Just hear me out Lil Lo aight?” He sparked the blunt before talking again. “Today you only got a lil taste of how grimey niggas can really be. I just feel like you should focus on yaself and school right now. Dont get me wrong we all wanna see you happy and living life, but dont rush it. Thats all Im saying.”
I sunk in my seat. “Fine. At least let me meet him.” He gave me a thumbs up and hesitated on passing me the blunt. I laughed and took it from him. Just because Im a college girl doesn’t mean I dont have my fun. Just as he pulled in the drive way we finished the wood. “Thank you again Kaiden. Please dont tell Londyn about this, I’d never hear the end of it.”
I smiled and patted his shoulder before letting myself out. Letting myself into the house I headed up the stairs and straight to my room. Being a pastry chef was not easy. Some days I have to work overnight and sometimes I dont get a break. I went to pick out some set of bra and panties. Then I gathered everything I needed for a nice hot bubble bath.

T R E Y
After dropping Adrienne off, I headed home. She changed her mind about the Netflix and ice cream, said she needed time to herself, and as surprising as it is I didn’t blame her. I hate having to put her through this all, but I love her way too much to just let her go.
My iPhone abruptly began to ring, breaking me from my train of thoughts. The caller ID read Camilla in black bold letters. I released a loud sigh before declining her call. As of now she was the last person I wanted to talk to. Don't get me wrong I love Camilla, but not in the way I loved her sister.
Adrienne was everything I needed and more. She just failed to realize that until after I hooked up with her sister. But, what I failed to realize were that the two were sisters until after I got with Camilla or else I wouldn't have put myself in this predicament. The thought of Camilla quickly pulled me into the memory of the night we first met.
"Listen Trey, as your brother I'm only trying to help you and it's clear yo ass getting just a little too attached to Adrienne. She my lil' buddy and all but I hate seeing my man like this, so I think it's time we all go out and have some fun." Jeremy smirked, as he searched through his phone for whatever reason.
"A little?!" Damien exclaimed, "This nigga over here pussy whipped."
"Aye man, watch ya mouth," I replied, "I'm not pussy whipped, I just have strong feelings for her."
"Whatever you say man, but remember this whole thing with Adrienne was only supposed to be a one night thing. It wasn't in the plan for you two to become 'friends with benefits' or whatever you call the relationship between you two, and it damn shole wasn't in the plan for you to drop the 'L-Bomb' on her, and become a complete pussy."  Damien says, taking a sip from his glass of Patron.
"Sorry man, I just had to say it one last time," he chortled.
I groaned, running a hand over my face. To say I disagreed with the guys would be a complete lie, they were right. Adrienne was just supposed to be a one night stand. But that one night, turned into multiple nights, which eventually brought us to being friends with benefits.
"Yeah, well damn I guess ya'll right. I need to just forget about Adrienne for right now and hit up the club or some shit." I replied, hoisting myself up from the leather couch. "I'm finna' go change, so we can head out," I said, before racing up the wooden stairs to my room.
_________________________________________________________
The club was turnt. Packed with bad bitches, a shit load of drinks, clouds of weed, and some live ass music. I was really feeling the vibe it gave me, I was straight chill.
Patron bottle in hand, I took a swig, bobbing my head to the bass of the music, before Jeremy lightly nudged me on the shoulder.
"Aye man, I got somebody here for you to meet," He whispered in my ear. I nodded, peeking over his shoulder to see a tall light skin chick behind him.
She was bad no doubt and she had a nice rack from what I could see. But, I wasn't really looking for someone to take back to the crib. I was just looking to turn up with the fellas.
"Nah bro, I'm not looking for someone to mess around with later. I just wanna have some fun," I countered.
"This is fun nigga! Look at least talk to her, she came all this way for you so the least you can do is speak." Jeremy retorted.
I sighed, adjusting my snapback before moving past him. Reaching my hand out to her before introducing myself. "Wassup baby, I'm Trey, you are?" I questioned, taking her hand in mine, giving it a light shake, flashing her my infamous smile.
"Hey Trey, I'm Camilla," she lightly blushed, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. You could tell she was nervous. For what reason? I don't know. Not to sound cocky or anything but I was used to that type of behavior from women. The blushing, the nervous giggles, averting their gaze to anywhere but mine, and so forth.
"Can I get I get you a drink?" I questioned, gesturing over to the many bottles of alcohol over at the table in our V.I.P section.
She nodded her head rapidly before placing her hand in mine as I guided her over to the table. Along the way you could see Damien's short ass talking to any chick that would listen. It was always comical to see him tryin' to pull chicks.
Especially because it seemed as if they never really took him serious, laughing at every little thing he said. I had to give the man props though, when he really tried he could pull some fine ass females.
"Whatchu' want? We got some Hennessy, Patron, Moscato, Tequila, Vodka, Champagne, some bottles of bee-"
"I'll take some Champagne," she interrupted. Pointing to the tall bottle of Champagne. I nodded pouring her a small glass of the alcoholic beverage. She beamed at me as she took the glass from out of my hand.
Shawty was really beautiful man, honestly. Her chocolate brown orbs glistened as she looked up at me. Her perfectly plucked eyebrows framing her face and her glossed lips forming into a cute little smile, showing over her pearly whites.
In a way she reminded me of Adrienne. I quickly shook the thought out of my head. She was supposed to take my mind off of Adrienne, not have my ass thinking of her.
"You live 'round here?" I asked, watching as she took a small sip from her glass. Her nude colored lips leaving a stain.
"Oh yeah, I live about 20 minutes away from here. Over by the Hilton Hotel and Red Lobster." She answered. I nodded, familiar with the area.
"What about you?" She quizzed, her left brow rising.
"I live fairly close to you. I live in Lincoln Park, North side of Chicago." I replied.
"Oooo fancy," she smirked, "my Bakery's out there," she added.
Bakery? I was impressed. She was pretty and she had something of her own. Adrienne once again popped up in my head. She too owned her own shit, a clothing store.
"Uh..Creamy Creations?" I guessed. It was the only bakery out there so that had to be the one.
She sent me a nod, "Yep, you guessed it."
"Wow! That's impressive, you own the best bakery up North." I stated. That was facts too, I loved goin' up there for some goods.
"Thank you, that means a lot to me." A wide smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "So what do you do?" She added.
"I own a club out on the west side, Unknown," I said with confidence. My business along with hers was also very successful.
"Really?! Oh my gosh me and sisters go there all the time," she beamed. "I've never seen you there though."
"Oh I be there, it be packed though so sometimes I be out in the back," I replied.
She nodded,"interesting." Her phone suddenly began to buzz interrupting our conversation. "Hold on, give me a quick second," she said, holding up her index finger. She quickly moved her two thumbs at a rapid pace, sending out from what I can see a text.
Releasing a light sigh she looked back up at me,"hey, I gotta. It's a family emergency. Can I get your number?" She questioned.
"Aw, yeah definitely, 804-335-0051." I answered.
She smirked putting it in her phone, "Virginia boy, huh?"
"You already know baby," I chuckled. Virginia is where I'm from, but Chicago is where I stay. I've always had mad love for the Chi, ever since I was just a youngin'. So when my boy Jeremy moved out here I had to follow suite.
"Well, I'm sending you a text, save my number." She said, sending me a toothy grin.
"Ight, I'll see you soon then." I replied, flashing her another one of my infamous smiles.
"Yeah for sure, bye Trey," she waved, strolling out the club.
_________________________________________________________
A small grin creeped on my  face at the memory of that night. Camilla and I may have hit it off really well. But she ain't got me like Adrienne got me.

TWENTY-EIGHT
Vanessa
Tumblr media
2 weeks later…..
Weeks went by and not once did I think about Trey. His antics on Thanksgiving really threw me off, but I didn’t care. He was upset because I wasn’t upset about his daughter’s mother. I don’t know if Trey liked drama or not, but from the looks of everything he loved it. He wanted me to be upset and start an argument all for what? I wasn’t about to feed into his bullshit and I think that’s why he’s really mad. He know’s I’m over him and he can’t stand it.
I was finally feeling good about myself. I let all my dead weight go and now I was happy. I finally found the right place I could call home and everything was really falling into place. I was almost seven months pregnant and I couldn’t wait for my baby girl to get here. I didn’t need to be with Trey just to feel secure. I didn’t need him for anything and I was okay with that. That’s not saying I don’t want him in Marley’s life, but if he doesn’t want to be around then that’s fine. I gave him enough time to see how our baby was doing, and he didn’t even bother seeing if she was okay. Once again, Trey is only thinking about himself.
Making my way into Nordstrom, I decided to shop for more baby clothes. Between me, Jalissa, Vashtie and my mother, Marley was being spoiled like crazy. She didn’t need anything else, but I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t wait for my baby girl to get here.
“ Oh god.” I sighed as I dropped my phone. I was already struggling to reach down and get it.
“I’ll get it for you.” His deep raspy voice caught my attention, but his face is what kept my attention. This man was fine, but he looked so familiar.
“Thank you. You didn’t have to do that.”
“You good. Vanessa?”
“Yeah…how do you-, never mind I’m sure you know me as Tremaine Neverson’s ex.” I said chuckling.
“Yeah, but I know you from the block. You don’t remember me?” He smiled and I got a good look at his face. That’s when it dawned on me, it was Samir.
I met Samir back in the sixth grade and he was in the eighth grade. He was like a big brother growing up and after I moved from the neighborhood when I was a freshman in high school, we tried our best to keep in touch. Then after a while, I didn’t hear from him. I heard he was in a gang and he was doing a lot and I just assumed he forgot about me. I never thought we would cross paths again, but here we are.
“Oh my god, Samir?! I haven’t seen you in like twelve years. How are you?”
“Shit I’ve been good. I own a little restaurant back on the block and I got a daughter now. I’ve been trying to stay out the streets and shit.”
“That’s good, Samir. How old is your daughter? I bet she looks just like you.”
“ Nine months and you know she does.” he said chuckling.  “What you having?” He asked pointing at my stomach.
“A girl. She’ll be here in March, I’m just ready for all this to be over. Plus I’m ready to go back to work.“
"You’re a radio personality, right? At least that was I seen all over social media.”
“Yeah, I’ve been in radio for four years now. I ended up moving to LA and then I finally finished up school out there. I only moved out there because of Tremaine, but that’s a long story.”
“Still with him?”
“No.” I said shaking my head. “ We’re done and I’m just trying to focus on myself and my daughter. Are you still with your daughter’s mother?”
“Nah, it just didn’t work out. It’s all good though. I just want to be a good example for her.” It was so weird hearing Samir talk about having a daughter and just having this new life. I was proud of him.
For another twenty minutes,  Samir and I kept talking. It felt good talking to an old friend and it’s not like Samir was just some guy from my past. This was my friend and I’m so happy we ran into each other. Besides Vashtie, Samir knew everything that happened in my life. It was times where I would go to him after my dad would pull his acts and he would be my protector. He was really the only male that cared about me and I still appreciate the things he’s done for me.
“Damn, I can’t believe I ran into you. I thought you forgot about me and just said fuck that nigga.”
“Hell, I thought you forgot about me. After I left the neighborhood we talked less and everything. I really needed you throughout the years. I’ve been through a lot, Samir. I won’t bore you with all the things I’ve been through, though. I’m sure you have to get going anyway.”
“It’s cool. I do, but after today I don’t ever want to stop hearing from you.  Here.” He handed me his phone and I put my number in it.
“Here you go. Now don’t forget about me, Samir.”
“I can never forget about you.” He pulled me in for a hug.
** The next day…
“Guess who I ran into yesterday?”
“Who?” Vashtie asked raising her eyebrow.
“Samir.”
“Stop it. Are you serious right now?”
“Yes. I ran into him at Nordstrom, and honestly, he looks good. He owns a restaurant and he even has a daughter.”
“Wow, another thing the both of you have in common; a daughter.” I sighed and continued to finish hanging my clothes up in my closet.
It’s no secret that Vashtie hates Trey, she only liked Samir. She thought that would be my boyfriend because of the way he protected me when my father abused me. Honestly, we were only friends and nothing more. Even after we lost touch, Vashtie constantly talked about how that should’ve been my boyfriend, but I already had one and she didn’t like him either.
“Vashtie, why are you like this?”
“Like what? I’m just saying, I always thought you two would’ve been like high school sweethearts and what not. You two deserved each other and now that you two reunited, something could blossom. After your pregnancy, though, of course. Can’t be thotting with a baby in your belly.”
"Vashtie, again, why are you like this? I may never see him again.”
“Let me see. She snatched my phone and God know’s what she was doing.”
“What are you doing?!”
“Wait, you’re letting him come over today?! Ahhhhhh! I might as well stay.”
“That was the plan. If you actually read the whole conversation, you would know he wants to see you.”
Yes I know I haven’t seen Samir in years and inviting him over seems like a lot. I just feel like I can still trust him enough to be in my space. This is my house and I can do what I want. It’s really just old friends catching up with one another. Plus, I’m pregnant and I’m not looking for anything with anybody.
“Hmm, we’ll see. Baby daddy just texted you, though.” I rolled my eyes and grabbed my phone. What did Trey want?
Trey: I’m back in town. I’m coming to see u in 15.
me: what?????????? Bye. You don’t pop up when you feel like it. I only texted you my new address in case of an emergency.
Trey: it’s an emergency.
I rolled my eyes so hard. I’m so tired of Trey thinking he can just show up when he wants. He went two weeks without checking on me or the baby. I did tell him my address only because anything can happen, but of all days he wants to show up and I have Samir stopping by. I already know if they’re here at the same time it can cause an issue on Trey’s end, but honestly, I could care less about his feelings.
“What did he say?”
“He said he’ll be here in fifteen minutes and meanwhile Samir will be over around that same time.”
“Good. Trey will be upset and I will enjoy every minute of it.”
“Vashtie.”
“Vanessa.” I sighed and shook my head. This was something I was not looking forward to.
Looking at my phone I got texts from both Trey and Samir. Samir was outside and Trey was less than five minutes away. I wasn’t going to let Trey ruin my day and I already knew what to do with him. I would see what he wanted and then I would have to make him leave. He was not about to make me and my company feel awkward. Honestly, maybe Trey seeing Samir here will make him leave me alone and only contact me about Marley.
“Coming!” I heard my doorbell ring and I automatically knew it was Samir.
Opening the door I seen his smile. That smile could light up a whole damn room and it was “contagious” too. Samir had a smile to where you would want to smile for no reason. You could be in the worst mood and his smile just had that effect on people. That’s what I need, though. I already know when Trey gets here a smile will be off of my face.
“Hey, Samir!” I said giving him a hug.
“What up?”
“Is that Samir?!” Vashtie ran to the door the both of embraced one another. This was really feeling like old times.
Getting ready to close the door, I felt something stopping it. At first, I thought it was something wrong, but then I realized it was Trey. I really wanted to know why he had to come here, lord just why?
“I can’t come in now?” Trey asked trying his best to come in.
“Now really isn’t a good time, Trey.”
“Why?” He walked in and made eye contact with both Vashtie and Samir.
“Hey, Samir…let me talk to you in the kitchen.” I heard Vashtie say. She knew the moment would be awkward. By the look of Samir’s face, I could tell it was. I’m glad they walked out just in time.
“Who is that?”
“A friend, Trey. What do you want, I’m kind of busy.”
“What friend? I don’t know him.”
“But I do. I’ve been knowing him longer than you, anymore questions?”
“So you’re bein’ a hoe while pregnant?” What the fuck was he talking about.
Trey has been disrespectful, but this was a new low for him. Calling me out of my name was new and I didn’t like it. How dare he even say that to me? I’m not even dating Samir let alone anyone. I’m pregnant and that’s not even on my damn mind. I don’t know what’s gotten into him but he needs to get it together. I’m tired of his ass and his crazy ass split personality. One minute he’s showing he cares and now this.
“Excuse me? I’m not dealing with anyone. You have some nerve popping up over here and the try to call me a hoe. Are you serious? Matter of fact you can go.”
“Feeling guilty, huh? I just asked a question. You got a new man around you all the time now. Something isn’t right.”
“Trey, do you hear how dumb you sound? New man? The only new man I ever had around me was Richard! Samir, yeah he’s actually an old friend. He’s the only man that ever gave a fuck about me because clearly, you didn’t, my father didn’t or Richard. Are you intimidated by every man that comes around me? What is the truth?”
“Sure. Now he’s the only man that ever cared about you? Just forget the five years I spent tryin’ to please your stubborn ass. I apologized countless times and still gave you what you wanted.”
“Gave me what I wanted?! Material shit didn’t mean a thing to me. Between that and the lies, what did you really give me? You gave me a broken heart and fucking baby. Which this baby is the only good thing coming out of this situation. You didn’t care about me, you only cared about yourself.”
“Please. You stayed with me and allowed me to do all that shit to you. Don’t act brand new now.” I was so flabbergasted. This man was either crazy or really showing me who he really was. “Anyways, I came over to reconcile, but you’re on bullshit again. I was considerin’ on forgivin’ you for the way you’ve been actin’ and possibly gettin’ back together.”
“You have literally lost what little mind you have if you ever think I’m getting back with you. Just leave me the fuck alone, Trey!”
“Yo, Vanessa, you good?” I turned around and seen Samir and Vashtie standing in the hall. This was so embarrassing.
“I’m good, Samir. He was just leaving.” Without hesitation, Trey shook his head and left. I was done completely. There was no reason for me to ever be around this man.

“Trey?” he spoke from behind me. The touch to my shoulder prompted my eyes to squeeze shut. “Talk to me, what's up?”
“We gotta kill him,” is what I said, and I stole a glance at my daughter sleeping in my arms. She was the only thing keeping me from bolting from this place with a vengeance. Things had to be done differently now; she depended on me and every decision would affect her. J only stared at me as I passed him my phone. “Axel, he knows this place. He… he grew up here.”
“What?” His brows creased in shock, his swollen eye squinted further. “There's no way -”
“I shared my location with him and that was his reaction,” I cut him off. I looked around for something to use, and I praised God when I found a brand new car seat for Nyla. I carefully sat her down, fastened her strap, and laid a blanket on top of her to protect her from the outside weather. She was extremely small to begin with, but putting her in this seat  seemed to make her shrink. But why was she small? She was full term. “We gotta go.”
“Trey, are you sure?” He stayed where he was, not even bothering to help me pack her things. “This has to be a misunderstanding. He can't possibly be -”
I shot him a look. “All I know is he could know where Cameron is, and we need to find her.” I had to suffer through the pain in my ribcage, and tucking my arm close to me only did so much, but I managed to lift the small bag and her car seat. I headed for the door, but didn't hear his footsteps following me. “J, come on.”
“What if you're wrong?” My phone remained in his hand, and the screen lit up yet again. This time he read it, and his lips pressed into a line. I assumed it was another text from Axel. “If you go and do something stupid and you end up bein’ wrong, then what? You really wanna be responsible for his death? Can you really live with that?”
I shrugged, dismissing him. “Shit ain't gonna be the same no matter what happens! What difference does it make?”
“The difference is you have someone to live for now!” He was fuming, face flushed red. Body tensed in both pain and disappointment towards me. “That little girl needs her father in her life, man. If you get caught for murdering him, you gonna go away for life. Is that what you want for her?”
Was it? Could I live with being incarcerated, away from my little girl? Could I live with her mother finding another man to replace me and watch him be her father figure? Teach her things she needs to know, act a damn fool when her name is called at graduation, walk her down the aisle for her wedding? Of course not, but what choice did I have? This man was messing with my family.
My silence unsettled him. “I'm not letting either of you out that door until you stand here and be a fuckin’ man. Stop thinking like a damn child, Tremaine.” He stepped forward, and I brought my gaze to meet his. “I remember how excited you were when Cam told you she was pregnant. You were even more excited when you found out she was giving you a daughter. I know that you're not gonna ever let her out of your sight if you have any say. And I know you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you end up getting locked up.”
“But he…” My nose was running, and my lashes felt damp.
“Talk to him, then we’ll go from there. Promise me.” He wanted to smile when I nodded, but part of him knew I wasn't being totally truthful. There was no telling what I would do upon seeing Axel. There were a lot of things jumbled in my mind, and all the things I pictured doing to him didn't end in anyone’s favor. J shrugged and sighed, defeated. “Let's go.”
He left me to carry Nyla and bring her out to the car left in the driveway. He also had no interest in driving, or even speaking to me for the duration of the drive to where Axel was - which was nearly on the other side of town. The more I sat still, the more anxious I became and the more my body began to resonate that it was badly injured. My side had a pulsing throb, and my eye felt like it had its own heartbeat. My lip was completely numb, and I tasted blood every time I tried to moisten it. It J was in pain, he barely let it show. The swelling in his face was just as bad, if not worse, than mine, and my heart sank at the thought of him being dragged into my mess. Throughout our entire friendship, J never had any trouble with anybody. He was a homebody, kept to himself. If it wasn't me or his family, he wanted nothing to do with it. He was shy, yet confident, level headed more than anything. And fatherhood didn't bring that on; he’d always been like that. We were complete opposites.
There was no way to make it up to him, to both apologize and thank him for being there for me through everything. No amount of money, no gift would ever explain what his brotherhood and loyalty meant to me. And I would make sure Nyla knew he was responsible for her making it out of this situation. He was her godfather, after all.
Axel’s location sent through his text led us to an abandoned parking lot. The building itself had long been demolished, and there wasn't even a foundation left in its place. The asphalt was riddled with weeds upon weeds, cracks and the worst potholes anyone could ever see. The single car was stranded in the middle of it all, and I slowly crept the car up behind it.
I felt his eyes on me as I gripped the steering wheel to the point where my knuckles turned pale. I gnawed on my lip, the rush of anger bringing beads of sweat to my forehead. I'm not going to lie, seeing him angered me all over again as if the entire conversation with Jermaine never happened. There were two voices in my head: one prompted me to remain calm and hear him out - maybe there was in fact an explanation as to why my newborn daughter was found at the house where he grew up; the other voice told me to fuck all that and just strangle him until his eyes popped out of his sockets, or to smash his head into the pavement until his brain spilled out of his skull. And I'll admit that the latter sounded more fulfilling.
From where I sat, Axel honestly looked dead. His eyes were closed, whether he could help it or not, and his body was slumped against the passenger door with his temple smudged against the window. He had larger lips to begin with, but they were swollen - damn near torn open. Why were all of our injuries similar?
“Trey,” J finally muttered when he followed my gaze. I choked underneath my breath, my eyes welling up all over again. “Trey…” I couldn't take it - I had to do something. I shoved my car door open and practically sprinted over to his door, and I completely ignored J. “Trey, Trey!”
“You son of a bitch!” I deliriously cried as I snatched him from the seat and slammed his back into the back passenger door, gripping the collar of his already torn shirt as his eyes blurred with surprise. “I'm gonna kill you and leave your body to rot!” My punch to his jaw threw him off the car and onto the ground, a cloud of dust rose like it was a scene from a movie. “No wonder you don't have any family.” I was ready to kick him in the gut when J rammed his shoulder into me, knocking me against the vehicle before my foot could make contact.
“Too fuckin’ far,” he growled at me as he groaned through his agony.
“Yo get off me.” I snatched away from him and glared down at Axel. He put up no fight, he didn't try and defend himself or even try and explain his side. He simply struggled to pull himself up against the side of the car. “I swear if you have anything to do with this…”
“With what?” he croaked, and there were tears in his eyes.
I tilted my head. “My daughter, my baby girl, was found where you used to live. Cam wasn't there and I have no idea where she is.”
“What?” He perked up, like a young puppy tilting his head to the side. His eyes widened as his face lost all its color and he shook his head rapidly. “No, I-I-I swear I didn't do it. W-Where is she? Is she okay?”
“She's fine,” I replied tightly. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw J branch off and examine the car. He checked the glove compartment, and I saw him tuck a small handgun into the waistband of his black jeans. Next he exited the car and made his way to the trunk. “Is that why you wanted to split up? So I wouldn't automatically kill you when you got caught? What, you tryna cover up the fact that you killed her? Huh?”
“N-No, I swear…”
“Stop lyin’ to me, man!” I was ready to just knock him out, because deep down I still felt he was lying to me, when a different thought knocked my mind of its railing. Spyder agreed to take Axel to wherever Cam was held, and the only thing around was the car. But she wasn't anywhere near here, unless -
“Cam?” The two of us snapped our heads to where J’s voice came from, and the lack of response shattered my heart into a million pieces. “Baby girl, can you hear me?”
No, it couldn't be.
“It's Jermaine. If you can hear me, I need you to squeeze my hand.”
She couldn't have been back there. That's impossible.
“Come on, baby girl. Gimme a squeeze.”
Cam was supposed to be with our daughter. We were supposed to be a family. We were supposed to cut her umbilical cord together, have some skin-to-skin bonding with her, childishly argue over what outfit she would wear home. She was supposed to be nursing. I was supposed to change her poopy diaper for the first time. Cam and I had already figured everything out, agreed on how everything would go.
It all happened so quickly. My hand was snatching the gun from J’s waistband and pointing it at Axel’s temple as the first round of tears dripped from his eyes. J was yelling at me, firing off demands to take control of the situation. Axel had his hands up, begging me to spare him.
My palm shook around the gun, my aim shaky and unfocused. I saw multiple Axel’s in my kaleidoscope vision. The voices in my head were loud with commands to just end it for the both of us. There were a couple of bullets in the clip, more than enough to get the job done.
“Trey,” J’s voice was louder than them all, but it was the softest, most urgent tone I’d heard ever come from him. “It's Jermaine. We have to call 911 now. Cameron needs more help than we can offer her. The police are gonna come too, and if they see you with a gun and Axel’s dead body… you can't be there for Cam nor Nyla. Can you give it to me?”
My entire body was trembling, and I was relieved that my finger wasn't on the trigger because I knew I’d fire it. And everything would be over. “But he… and she…”
As soon as his hand touched my own, every ounce of tension released and he caught the firearm just before it began falling to the ground. “I know, I know.” He gave one gentle tug and I was sobbing in his arms, harder than I would have liked for either of them to witness. He gave me a squeeze, but his own voice sounded strained and hesitant. “She has a pulse. It's shallow, but she's alive. I don't want you looking at her right now, but you gotta know that he didn't kill her. She's not dead, okay? And the sooner they help her, the sooner she’ll get better. Okay?” He released one arm from me so he could retrieve his phone to put in the call. As it rang, he rubbed my back. “The police are gonna ask us a lot of questions, but you don't have to answer anything until there's a lawyer present, okay?”
Fifteen minutes. That's how long it took for the two ambulances to arrive; their lights blinding, their sirens deafening. During that wait, I had vomited twice onto the concrete and succumbed to the weakness. I could only sit up against the other car, eyes staring blankly at the asphalt. Shock is what they call it, I think.
That was fifteen more minutes knocked off of Cam’s life. Who knows how long she had been in that trunk. Who knows what she endured during her labor and delivery, and whatever they put her through afterwards.
I vaguely remember a couple of cops showing up and attempting to ask me questions about who I was and what was happening, but there were more important things. I tapped away on my phone with shaking fingers, carefully dialing my mom’s number.
Her soft-spoken voice as she repeated her greeting a few times is what told me this was really happening. That this wasn't a nightmare. “Tremaine, baby? Hello?”
“Ma…” I smiled against my tears, hearing her voice made me feel slightly better, that I was actually on this earth and maybe I wasn't alone. “You gotta meet us at the hospital.”
She didn't ask questions. She didn't try and pry answers from me. She immediately picked up on the tone in my voice and she knew. “Alright, I'll be there as soon as I can be.”
/.\
They didn't admit me into a room, but they did patch me up. The cleaning solution or whatever it was they used on my cuts didn't faze me. How could it? It was nothing compared to what I felt on the inside. My ribs were only badly bruised so they gave me this wrap to wear and insisted on no heavy lifting or bending.
Upon my release, there was a nurse waiting for me holding a pink bundle in her arms. Her eyes lit up when she saw me, and we met in the middle of the hallway. “You're this darling’s father, right?”
I only nodded at first. “Is she okay?”
Jayla was what her name tag read. “She's in perfect health. Maybe a little hungry, but nothing to be concerned about. Do mind if I ask you some questions for her birth records?”
I shrugged a shoulder when she was in my arms, but followed the nurse to her station. I recited my first and last name along with my birthday, as well as Cam’s information. She asked for my daughter’s full name, birthday, eye and hair color, and her weight. I had no problem answering until the last question. I had no clue how much she weighed.
“I don't… I don't know.”
She didn't understand at first, but her face softened and she offered me a genuine smile. “Come with me and we can get her weighed.” I hesitated when she reached her arms out for her, and reluctantly followed her to the nursery. She unwrapped and undressed Nyla before placing her on a scale. “She was full term?”
I nodded.
“Hm,” she couldn't help but smile as Nyla fussed from the breeze. I was going to lash out on her, but she easily got her to calm down. “Daddy won't let anything happen to you, princess. He's right here, see?”
I brought her close to me, cradled her to my chest, and she completely relaxed like she already committed my touch to her memory.
“She's five pounds, eleven ounces.” She couldn't stop smiling at me. “I'm going to get her feet printed for her birth certificate, okay?” She stepped away from her computer to retrieve what she needed and I ran my finger down Nyla’s delicate little foot. When Jayla came back, she waited a moment before speaking. “Alright, baby. This is gonna be really cold, okay?” The pad of ink against her feet initiated another cry, and I swallowed hard. “I know, I know. I'm so sorry, baby.” When she was satisfied with her work, she giggled. “Alright, Daddy will make it all better.”
I redressed her and swaddled her like a burrito when her feet were cleaned off, and I sprinkled some kisses right along the edge of her little hat.
“T-Thank you,” I said to Jayla.
Her smile widened, became brighter as she handed me a small card. “If you need anything, anything at all, you can contact me here. Congrats on the miracle.” When she didn't get a response, she stepped away and went back to work. I shoved her card in my pocket and made my way from the nursery and to the general waiting room.
J was already waiting, patched up and in pain near the back. We met eyes, and he looked away briefly before sighing deeply - something from his gut. “She's okay?”
I nodded as we both looked down at her. She was wide awake and looking around. “Any word on -”
“I'm not family so they won't tell me shit. Axel should be out in no time. Looked like he needed stitches.”
I wiped my eyes for the umpteenth time today and settled in silence. I felt...inhuman. None of this felt real - even my own daughter in my arms felt like a figment of my imagination. Every coo and murmur sounded foreign and nothing about her clicked in my mind that she was actually here and she was perfectly fine.
“Mumma,” I breathed, and my legs nearly broke into a sprint toward her. She had barely gotten both feet through the sliding glass door, and she hadn't even heard me, before I almost collided with her. She was much smaller than I was, but I felt like a little boy all over again in her arms. Her touch was warm, more comforting than anything I could imagine in that moment. I didn't want to be anywhere else except with her so she could protect me from my fears. “M-Mumma…”
“Trey.” I was trembling again, and she held my face tenderly while she got a good look at me. “What's happened to you?”
I looked down at the bundle in my arms, feeling to weak to begin to express half of what was going on, and my mom’s gaze followed my own. Her lips parted to speak, but nothing came out. She wanted to be excited, and I knew she was, but she knew something was off. Her fingers were featherlight against my daughter’s face, and the tears weren't far off. She met my eyes as a way to ask if this was real. “Her name is Nyla Rose,” I whimpered. “She's your granddaughter…”
She was at a loss for words, but her wet eyes held so many questions.
“Mumma, we gotta talk… where's Forrest?”

Chapter 1: All Work, No Play
Jolie
Tumblr media
I had just finished unpacking my last suitcase that I took with me to Turks and Caicos last week. My family tries to go on a family vacation each year, and this year we finally went to the islands. We’ve only been back for 2 days and I have yet to see my father, or aunt, or anyone else for that matter. It’s like as soon as we landed back in California, it was work mode all over again. I love my dad and everything he does for me and the family, but he needs a break sometimes. I thought that him spending two weeks in Turks would help, but even on vacation he managed to network with a drug dealer out there. He just doesn’t know when to stop.
Throwing the empty suitcase into my walk-in closet, I placed my iPhone in my back pocket and made my way down to his office. As my bare feet hit the marble floors of our mansion, I could hear my dad’s voice and another male’s voice speaking rather loudly as I approached the hallway with each step. i paused for a minute, trying to distinguish the voice but to no avail; I hurriedly entered the room without knocking (my dad hates that) and made my presence known.
“Hey daddy. Hi uncle Daniel.” I spoke in a very soft-like tone.
Both men looked at me with complete anger on their faces. I knew something was wrong, the vibe in the room was just off.
“Hey baby girl, I was just leaving. I’ll see you later next week for your birthday dinner, ok? I’ll work on that problem we got Vic. He won’t be able to leave Los Angeles, let alone the country when I’m done with him.”
My dad nodded his head, and my godfather exited the office leaving us alone.
“Jolie, how many times do I have to tell you to stop barging in the office, just knock first.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I just haven’t seen you since we got back. You’re always working.” I replied.
“Yes, so my spoiled daughter can shop and buy all the Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and whatever else she wants.” He laughed.
“So, what was Daniel talking about? Who’s getting hurt this time?” I inquired.
My father and godfather never let me know what was going on. They said it was for the better. My dad, Victor Leon, is the most successful kingpin in Los Angeles. In his line of work, he also has many enemies. People who would love to see me and my whole family dead.
“That’s nothing for you to worry about. Just focus on your birthday coming up. I want you to be happy, ok.”
I nodded and got up to kiss my dad on the cheek. I walked out of his office feeling worse than I felt before. A dark cloud was coming to consume our lives, and there was nothing I could do about it. I just hope my family is safe from harm.
“Ooh bitch, Miami is gonna be sooo lit! I want all the liquor and niggas in our section at the club!” Brooke exclaimed while looking through a rack of dresses in Neiman Marcus.
I’m leaving for Miami in two days with my best friends Brooke and Sydney, and my little cousin Brielle. The four of us, plus our security detail that my dad forced me to have, are spending about a week out there. We have no definite plans, just a whole bunch of shit that we want to do while we’re there. Brooke wants to find a temporary bae, Brielle wants to get white girl wasted since it’s her first time leaving California without family, while Sydney and I just want to shop.
“Does this look good?” I said modeling a Herve Leger dress for the girls to see. They both nodded in agreement while I headed back to the dressing room.
“For real though Jo, we gotta hit up the strip down there. I bet those bitches in Miami ain’t got no style. Andrea told me they got some popping boutiques.” said Sydney.
“Bet. Is Andrea chilling with us when we touchdown or are we gonna have to act like tourists the whole trip?” I replied.
“I doubt it. She just had a baby, so she might not be able to party.” Sydney retorted.
Andrea was a good friend of ours from college until she moved to Miami to be with her boyfriend. Her family told her not to follow a man, especially one she wasn’t married to, but she went anyway. Two years later, Andrea got pregnant and her boyfriend got drafted to the NFL and left her to be a single mom. Hopefully when we visit her, she’ll get the courage to come back home to her family and friends. She doesn’t belong in Miami by herself.
The three of us finished shopping and headed back home. I dropped Sydney off at her grandmother’s house, so it was just me and Brooke in the car. Brooke has been acting funny all day and I feel like she’s hiding something from me. She’s been my best friend since we were in elementary school so she’s like the sister I never had; I know her like the back of my hand.
“I can tell when something is bothering you so spill it Brooke.” I spoke.
She stared out the window for a while then turned in her seat to face me as we approached a red light.
“Promise you won’t get mad?” she sighed.
“Mhm, I promise. Now tell me.”
“I ran into Drew last week. He and Tony are back in the city for good. I need to leave again Jolie.” She whimpered as tears ran down her face.
I immediately pulled over to a side street and pared the car; this was serious. Drew is my ex-boyfriend from college and Tony is Brooke’s ex. Drew and I had a regular relationship, nothing too serious. He always wanted me to ask my dad could he work for him, but I denied it. I never want to date a man that’s in my dad’s line of work. I already stress over my father, godfather, and uncle-in-law’s safety. Adding a boyfriend to that stress would be too much for me.
However, Tony and Brooke were a different story. Tony was possessive and extremely jealous. Brooke is a beautiful girl but she’s loyal. No matter how many guys approached her on campus, she always made it known that she was with Tony, but that wasn’t enough for him. He became enraged one night when Brooke was studying with a male classmate. That night he beat Brooke so bad in her dorm and no one helped her. I found her the next day when she wasn’t answering my calls and took her to the hospital. My aunt Mila helped take care of Brooke and she lived with us all throughout college. As for Tony, he disappeared with Drew when he found out Brooke pressed charges and put out a restraining order. She’s made progress, but I know the thought of Tony coming back to town scares her.
“Well did Drew say anything to you? Was Tony with him?” I rushed out. I took my phone out the cup holder and began texting my father.
“He just said hello, asked how I was doing. He also asked about you, and if you still were living in Hidden Hills. I didn’t say anything to him. That’s when he told me about Tony and how he’d be glad to see I was back in Los Angeles. I can’t let Tony find me, Jolie. He’s still angry about the charges and restraining order!” she sobbed.
“He won’t get to you, I promise. We’ll be in Miami in forty-eight hours, and when we get back you can stay with us again, my dad won’t mind. He loves you like a daughter.” I assured.
She nodded, and I wiped her tears and hugged her. My dad was right to give me a security detail because I need it now more than ever. Drew was stalking me after our breakup, which forced us to move from Hidden Hills to Orange County. I still ride up to Los Angeles every now and then for business and friends, but I must be more careful. If Drew knows Brooke is in the area, then he knows I’m not too far away. The last thing I want is to move again. My dad and aunt said next time, we’re moving out of state. But now that’s looking like a possibility.

Mine | Chapter One
Tumblr media
Micah Bradley
“Girl I’m so ready for tonight!” My roommate Georgette mentioned while applying her mascara to her falsies. I finished putting on my gold studded hoops when my phone lit up for the tenth time in a row. I held my phone in my hand staring at his name flash across my screen. I want to answer so bad, but I already know that answering now wouldn’t solve the argument that will brew later.
“Put..it..down. You’re allowed to have fun Micah, he does this shit all the time”, Georgette came from out the bathroom sitting down on my bed.
“I have fun” I tried sounding convincing. Georgette rolled her eyes and gave me ‘The Bitch Please’ look. “Micah, every time you’re not in his sight he blows up your phone. He treats you like a child instead of his freaking girlfriend.”
“He just worries about me that’s all” I replied.
“Yeah, right.”
I sent the call straight to voicemail. I will not allow him to ruin my girl’s night out with Georgette, I look too good for any negative vibes. “Raindrop, drop top smokin’ on cookie in the hotbox…” I mouthed along as Bad and Boujee played from GeeGee’s phone. Typically I don’t listen to rap unless I’m going out, it always sets the mood for the night.
I gave my outfit one last look before grabbing my clutch purse, “You ready?” Georgette came back into the room grabbing her phone off the bed, “If you are” she replied. Shaking my head, we started for the door.
“Micah! Open this fucking door!”
I can hear Omar’s voice on the other side of the door. ‘Damn’ I said mentally, I was almost out the door! Unlocking the door Omar’s tall frame came pushing through. “Fuck you not answering my calls for?” He spat angrily.
“I-I-I don’t know” I stuttered.
“If I call your mouthafuckin’ phone answer it!” He yelled grabbing my arm tightly. “Get’s your hands off of her!” Georgette spat, yanking Omar’s hand from off my arm. “Stay out of this Georgette..”
“And what? I’m not her..I’ll fight yo ass” she retorted. “You talk to her like she’s your fucking child..like grow a pair and shut the fuck up and let her be…DAMN!”
I hated when Georgette intervenes. I know she’s trying to help but that only pisses Omar off even more, which makes him take it out on me.
“Shut yo thot ass up, like what the fuck are yall two wearin’ anyway?” He questioned looking at the both of our outfits. “Thot? Bitch I’ll mop ya ass! I got four brothers so I’m about that action” Georgette spat.
“Omar please, I can’t feel my arm” I whispered looking down. “Take this shit off!” He ordered. I rolled my eye’s and sighed.
 “No.”
Omar stared dead at me. I could see the fire burning in his eyes. I know I’m not even helping my own case, but I’m sick and tired of him acting this way. Georgette was right, I’m not Omar’s child and he needs to start respecting me.
“Micah, I’m not going to say this again..turn yo ass back around and change out of this fucking ass bullshit! You ain’t going out anywhere tonight!” He barked.
“Nah nigga. You heard her, she said no” Georgette interjected. Omar raised his hand as if he was going to hit her…”Fine! Okay, I’ll stay home!” I shouted in fear of what he would do to my best friend.
“I wish you would! Hit me! Bitch ass nigga, do it and I’ll have all my brothers up here ready to handle that ass once I’m finished with you! Matter of fact I should call them anyway since your little punk ass likes putting your hands on Micah.”
“Georgette chill…he didn’t mean it okay!”
“Micah, are you seriously sticking up for his stupid ass? I’m sorry girl…I love you but you need to drop him and get you some help.”
“Yo Georgette how bout you get a man before you step foot into someone else’s relationship” Omar chuckled. She sighed deeply and rolled her eyes. With a tight lip, Georgette looked like she wanted to say more, but grabbed her purse and stormed out the front door slamming it behind her.
Turning my attention back to Omar, the back of his hand came in contact with my face. Falling to the floor in pain, I laid there letting the tears roll down my cheeks.
“Omar please!” I cried as he gripped tightly around my neck pulling me up. Clawing at his hands I tried my best to break free but it was no use. His piercing black orbs sent chills down my spine.
I could almost stare directly into his soul. The problem is…he doesn’t have one. If there was a soul in his body he wouldn’t have me pinned up against this wall.
“Shut that crying shit up Micah! You know I can’t stand that shit” Omar growled.
How did we end up like this? Where did we go wrong?
The guy I once loved was gone and I don’t ever think he’s coming back…not for me at least. “I-I-I can’t breathe” I struggled as my tears stained my white shirt. I figured he had enough since his grip loosened and air quickly rushed into my lungs. Falling limp to the floor, my head banged against the wall. I knew sticking up for myself would lead to this…I should have kept my mouth shut. But I didn’t, and I should’ve known better but time after time I pray that he would be different.
“I’m so sick and tired of your dumb ass Micah! When are you gonna learn to stay in your damn place?”
“I-I’m sorry baby” I apologized, bringing my knees inwards to my chest. I felt Omar’s eyes burning a hole in me. A hole where there is nothing. “Getcho ass off the floor and freshen up. I don’t need you looking like a mess when your nosey ass friend returns.”
Without a word and with what little strength I had left, I managed to pick myself up from off the floor and headed for the bathroom. Looking in the mirror I could see a bruise starting to form around my neck.
Why do you take this Micah? Why are you losing yourself?

01|A Bad Situation
Tumblr media
Even though I was almost two months into my third year of medical school my body still found it difficult to adjust to the hours I was putting in like now. My eyes felt heavy and the steady beating of the rain against the hospital window wasn't proving helpful to my current situation. Attempting to keep up my grades, I was doing some reading on the conditions I had come across with patients during rounds this morning, but all I really wanted to do was sleep. A yawn escaped my Ruby Woo painted lips before my phone nearly startled me as it vibrated against my leg.
I was thankful I was in the M3-M4 lounge and not on the floor with my attending physician. Fishing the iPhone out my pocket my face scrunched up in confusion as I registered the caller. It was Shayla: my cousin. Our relationship hadn't been the same over the last few years. We went from speaking just about every day to not really speaking at all so I couldn't fathom why she'd be calling me, but nonetheless, I exited the lounge not wanting to disturb anyone else as I answered my phone.
“Hello?”
“You need to get down to Methodist hospital right now. I'm here with your mother.”
“Wait what! Is she okay? What happened?”
“She’s in surgery. Trinity please just get down here.”
The familiar beep let me know the call ended and I couldn't gather my things fast enough as I went to find my resident and let them know of my sudden family emergency. I ran as fast my feet would carry me and caught the first cab I could get into. Any other day I would have gotten on the subway to get me to Brooklyn, but the hour long ride wasn't going to cut it today: not while my mother was sitting in the hospital and I had no idea what was going on.
As the cab drove through the busy streets of New York City my mind kept running over different scenarios. I hadn't gotten a chance to see her this morning because when I left she was still in bed, but up to last night she'd been just fine so what could have gone wrong while I was at school. What could be wrong that she’d be in surgery? My mind was spinning and it didn't help that I didn't have any information besides the fact I needed to haul ass. The salty liquid left my eyes causing me to wipe at my face as I pulled my phone from my pocket.
I wanted to call Shayla back, but if she wasn’t willing to give me answers before I knew she wouldn’t give them to me now and honestly I wasn’t sure if I could handle the information I was seeking in my fragile state. So instead of dialing her number, I hit my second favorite contact and placed the phone to my ear. Upon hearing my best friends voice I didn’t even give him our usual stupid greeting.
“Caleb, mama is in the hospital,” My voice shaky.
“What? Is she okay?”
“I don’t know.” As the words fled my lips I felt a sense of hopelessness leave with them causing a sob to push its way through.
“Calm down baby girl. Don’t get yourself worked up until you know any thing for sure. Where are you now?”
“I’m in a cab on my way to Methodist.”
“I’ll meet you there and I know you’re stressing yourself out. Stop it! Mama is going to be fine.”
The line disconnected and though I knew his words were sincere I still couldn’t stop my brain from getting ahead of itself. I could feel the driver looking at me from the rear view mirror, but I had no shame as I continued to let everything out not caring that I was embarrassing myself in the back of this cab. Pulling up to a red light he handed me some tissues and I mumbled a barely audible thank you before dabbing at my face.
“You’re welcome beautiful. Keep it positive.”
The trip from the Lower East Side to Brooklyn didn't take too long considering it was rush hour and upon overhearing my situation the driver put a little peep in his step. Pulling up to Methodist I was pretty much out the cab before it could come to a complete halt.  Upon entering I wasted no time asking for directions to get where I needed to be. The elevator doors let me out on the third floor and I immediately spotted Shayla, but she wasn’t alone. By her side was her fiancé Brandon. It wasn’t that I disliked him I just didn’t know him very well and that was partially to blame on the lack of communication between Shayla and myself. Had we been close like we once were I’m sure things would be different. Rushing over to them I skipped over the formalities.
“Tell me what’s going on.” My tone demanding.
With tears in her eyes and trembling lips, Shayla looked up at me and immediately I could spot how uncomfortable she was and maybe that’s why she didn’t oblige with my request. Instead, it was Brandon who gave me the 411.
“She’s still in surgery, and the doctors haven’t given us much word yet, except they believe she had a stroke.”
“A stroke?” I asked in disbelief. “How?” My question was rhetorical because I didn’t expect Shayla or Brandon to have those answers, but why didn’t I notice something. Maybe because stroke symptoms weren’t exactly obvious and I’d never heard her complain about said symptoms. That could’ve been it or perhaps it had something to do with me spending most of my day at a hospital worrying about everyone else’s issues but my own. Was I not the girl with six figures worth of debt all in pursuit of a career in medicine, yet I couldn’t see problems in my own household or with my own mother? I was already failing.
Plopping down in the seat next to Shayla I buried my face into my hands as I found myself crying again. My emotions were getting the best of me again and I absolutely hated it. I felt a hand on my back offering comfort, but the touch felt forced and it made my sense of anxiety even higher. With my tear filled eyes, I looked over to Shayla as I shrugged away from her touch, feeling myself growing angry and frustrated.
“Don't touch me.” I spat.
“Excuse you?”
“You heard me.”
“Let's get something straight I don't need to be here. That isn't my aunt or mother in that operating room. And FYI had I not found her she'd probably be on her way to the coroner’s office you ungrateful brat.”
“Ungrateful? When my father was around she was your aunt, right? When your mother did -” I got ready to tell her something she might not be too fond of hearing, but someone calling my name stopped me from reading her for filth.
“Trinity.”
Looking to the caller of my name I got out my seat and engulfed Caleb in a hug. His touch on my back was one of security. It felt soothing as I cried into his shirt while he attempted to hush my cries. Pulling away from me he held my face as the pads of thumb removed stray tears from my face.
“She had a stroke. What am I going to do if she doesn’t pull through? I can’t lose her, Caleb. I can’t go through that pain of losing a parent again.”
Almost eight years ago I’d lost my father to coronary artery disease. I knew he was watching over mama and me, but it wasn’t the same thing as him being here. I missed our car rides where we’d drive around aimlessly talking about any and everything. The only cap and gown he’d seen me in were my high school one. He wasn’t there to see my biggest accomplishment thus far: graduating from NYU with my bachelors of science in biochemistry.  Even though it’d been so long I still thought about him and tried to honor his memory.
“I know. Mama’s a fighter. She’s gonna make it and the first thing she’s going to do is whoop your ass for doubting her.”
A chuckle escaped our lips. I appreciated his efforts to cheer me up with everything going on.
Taking a seat, we began playing the waiting game hoping to hear some good news.
-
The three hour surgery felt like it had lasted forever, but the doctors finally emerged to update us on my mother's condition
“So Mrs. St. James suffered a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a brain aneurysm. We were able to stop the bleeding from the aneurysm, but there might some side effects from the stroke. With the stress of her stroke we had no choice, but to put her into a medically induced coma. We’ll be monitoring her.  For now, her condition is critical but stable. “
My mouth felt dry as words failed to form. How was I supposed to respond to that? She was alive and I was grateful, but she was in a coma. What was I going to do without my mama?
“Can we allow her daughter to visit her for a few minutes?” Caleb spoke up.
“Certainly. We encourage you to talk to her.”
My feet felt like they were stuck to the floor, but I somehow found it in me to move forward and follow the doctor my mother's room in the ICU.
She looked to be in a deep sleep, but I knew it was more than that. I didn't even bother taking a seat bed side; I instantly took a hold of her hand.
“Mama, I need you so you have to snap out of this. You can not leave me.”
Casting my gaze to the ceiling I was attempting to keep my tears at bay.
“You have to watch me graduate from med school and start my residency. We have to argue about where I'm going to pursue my residency. We aren't done yet. Our story isn’t done. We still have so much to discuss. I just... I love you, mama.”
There was so much more I wanted to say, but she’d hear it when she woke up from this coma. Placing a kiss on her forehead I exited the room and walked right into Caleb’s arms.
“Let’s go,” I said.
Taking one last look at Shayla I shook my head as Caleb and I headed to the parking lot.
Music poured from the speakers of Caleb’s Maxima, but other than that the car ride was silent. I was all in my head over analyzing trying to put my medical knowledge to the test, but it wasn’t doing anything for me. Taking a deep breath, I repeated the words said to me earlier.
‘Keep it positive.’
The familiar white and blue brownstone house came into view before the car came to a stop.
“Do you want me to stay the night?”
“No, it’s okay Caleb. Thank you though. I appreciate the offer.” I gave him a small smile before placing a kiss on his cheek.
Exiting the vehicle Caleb didn’t pull off until I made it inside. I immediately went to shower hoping for it give me a more relaxed state of mind and it did exactly that as I had come out half an hour later. Getting comfortable in the living room I attempted to get some studying done, but that was useless especially with my stomach grumbling letting me know I should feed myself.
Searching the fridge, I pulled out yesterday's leftovers which consisted of breaded pork chops, baked potatoes, and a side of veggies. Heating it up I sat at the dining room table, but even with me being as hungry as I was my appetite wasn’t there.
Memories of Mama and I preparing the food flooded my head. We were happy and laughing as we cracked jokes. Now, what if this was the last time I had one of her meals?
I couldn’t do this to myself and I wouldn’t. I would not drive myself crazy and throw a pity party. Mama wouldn’t want me to so I decided to take Caleb’s offer, but it wasn’t him I was inviting over. Picking up my phone I dialed an old friend up knowing he’d find the perfect way to keep me occupied.
“Finally figuring out how the phone works?”
“Tristian, I need you to come over.”
